I found a Fairy Tales book from Usborne is a Goodwill store yesterday, so I looked at the Usborne website. There are some good books on there…but so expensive. Does anyone find that these books blend well with the CM methods? For instance, their poetry and Shakespeare collections, science encyclopedias, etc. They are so nicely illustrated for younger children. My 5 yr old dd sat there and looked through every page of a 350 page book and it held her attention.

I like them as reference type books for the kids to page through, look at the pictures, etc, but I think many people find them hard to narrate from because it tends to be just ‘snippets’ of information along with the illustrations rather than a true storyline. I personally wouldn’t use them as stand-alone spines, but might keep them around to refer to the pictures, diagrams, etc alongside the more narrative books.

Okay, good point. I was thinking for instance, their Egyptian Sticker book to go along with Module 1 Ancients, and then their Famous Painting Cards and Famous Artist book to combine for my own Art curriculum. It would be way cheaper then buying the CM Art Profile, though I love that idea.

We like some of their books, but many of them are too choppy, in my opinion. Our library has lots of their books.

I agree with the above about a lot of their books being more for pictures and reference vs read aloud and narrate. Having said that there are still quite a lot of their books that we have really enjoyed!
I have collected quite a few from this series and we really enjoy them (for younger children obviously) in fact a couple of them wore out so I re-bought them in library binding :o)

Usborne sells their books through reps (I am NOT one by the way, lest your think this is a sales pitch :o) so chances are there may be a homeschool mom in your area that sells them, you may want to ask around. Or you could do a search on their website for a rep in your area and host a home show. I’ve done that several times in the past and it was a lot of fun for me and the other moms I invited. The links above are just for whatever Usborne site came up first in a Google search so I don’t think it is the main Usborne homepage.

Don’t forget to check the used bookstores for these if you want them – I found several pretty inexpensively that way.

Ladyofthehouse, the links you posted don’t work anymore. Do you happen to remember which books you were referring to? I am hosting a usborne party soon and would love to know your recommendations!
