We are getting ready to use these exact ones. I have used the Visits to the Middle East and had created my own version of the Stuff They Left Behind for Greece before those came out.
I love, love, love the simplicity of the Visits to… series. We have all the books, so it literally is pull it out and go for us. I like the books and the introduction that they create. And it is simple to add another book (I have others that occasionally I pull out) if you want. But they are great as is.
I also LOVE the pictures in these type of studies. All of a sudden, these are real people with real things…and then connections start being made. It is so neat to realize this as a teacher when you are watching/reading something and your kids start popping off “I recognise that….” or “That’s just like the one we studied, remember, Mom?” or “It reminds me of ….”
I use the Visits to Europe; however, since my oldest is only 8, I decided not to do the map drills on Europe. Instead we have focused our maps first on continents, then U.S., and now capitals. We do locate countries, but I do not require him to know all European countries. I do like the supplemental books w/ it and have enjoyed learning about different cultures.
I just started using the portfolio, b/c I had not found a Rome resource I liked for the ages of my kids. I just recently found a big picture book at the library where we read on different aspects and then began tying in the portfolio pictures with that. I plan to use them more after Christmas.
All in all I have been happy w/ these resources to go along with the Matthew history book.
