I was wondering if anyone on here has already used or is currently using the SCM guide for the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Reformation? If you have please share the ages of children you used it with, what you liked, what you loved, etc. Including any favorite books or activities.
We’re starting this one in May and have not used any of the SCM guides before as we’ve been mostly unit studies, lapbooks, and reading aloud. My children are 9, 6, 5, 3, 1, and 6 weeks.
I’m using it now with dd9 and ds6. I have dd3 and ds1, too, but there not in school yet.
We used it for a few weeks and then had an extended break (new baby, running a co-op, life, etc.) and have just started up again this week. We are enjoying it and like the age specific books best. We have all of the family, 1-3 & 4-6 books. The Famous Men book has good info. & I like it, the kids like it ok, but it isn’t their favorite.
I am using it with my ds8, dd6. I have a ds4 and dd1 as well. We are using it. The children love the readers that are targeted to thier age range. My oldest enjoyed the Famous Men book, but I have also been trying to do the readings from Ambleside for year 2. AO’s history books seem to be a better fit for the family read allowed because my second child listens to them better. We do how ever use the FMof the MA books periodically when I feel that there is an important story in there that is missed in AO. The children are really enjoying the geography selections as well. I was impressed the few times I have done a full book naration. They are retaining a lot of the books that are in thier age range suggestions.
I just wanted to mention that we are studying the Middle Ages this year with ds 10, dd 7, dd5 and ds 5. I downloaded Famous Men of the Middle Ages for free from http://www.booksshouldbefree.com for my oldest. He listens independently and narrates, and for the others I use the “younger” read alouds and readers.
I know Charlotte read books to 6 year olds that were quite “high level” compared to today’s standards. Sometimes this works in my family, and sometimes not. My oldest really enjoys FM of the MA…the others not so much. So we just went with it.
I just started the Middle Ages guide 2 weeks ago, so I can’t comment too much, but I will add to this thread when I have somehting interesting to report.
We are also using the audio of Famous Men of the Middle Ages.
Since we started The Vikings this week, we will be adding this craft.
