I was wondering if any of you ladies use the SCM curriculum guide “as is.” Basically, you follow each subject and the suggested SCM books, etc. If so, how do you like it?
I have spent a lot of time researching the CM methods. I’m hooked. I know this is the way I want to school my children. I just don’t want to pick and choose from a lot of various resources. I’ve spent quite a bit of time here on SCM and the curriculum guide looks fantastic.
We follow the SCM guide for all our subjects. The only difference we’ve made is that we have studied the artists, composers and poets in a different order than what’s listed here. Also, we haven’t always read every book that was listed in the literature section for each grade. We haven’t done a Shakespeare play or done hymn study yet, as we are still getting used to this method. I hope to incorporate those pretty soon though.
I’m so thankful for the SCM guide. Our kids would be graduation age before I could’ve even implemented this method if I’d had to read all the volumes of Charlotte’s work and figure out the plan for myself! I’ve really been liberated from the public school mindset on what education looks like by following this guide. (I know the liberating came from God, but I believe He chose to use this site to do it!) I’ve also become familiar with what would be considered CM friendly so that I feel some freedom to add resources that aren’t listed in this guide. At first I felt like I was following a recipe, but now I know I’ve been learning the method.
So for us, it’s worked wonderfully and I’m very pleased with the progress that’s being made in our homeschool.
Thanks so much, MJ! I am new to the CM philosophies, too. But I have been reading lots of info over the past year or so. I know this is how I want to school our children. My children are still young (4 & 1). But I am thankful I have found this site now. I am happy to hear that SCM has been so helpful for you! The guide looks so great. I can see using it to start off with and go from there. Thank you for the good report. 🙂
We are following the Curriculum guide from History on down to Shakespeare. We are doing Module 6. We also are doing French, typing, character building, and Nature Study as listed. For Grammar instead of Grammar for the Thoughtful Child we are using Intermediate Language Lessons. For Math we use Horizons. I might switch to RightStart next year as I really like how it looks. For Science we do our own thing. Spelling we use Sequential Spelling.
Her guide makes things so easier and its wonderful that they offer it free. I am doing Module 1 for History next year and went ahead and bought Genesis to Deut. – Ancient Egypt. I really like it and it would definitely work for younger children too.
