Hi – We’re about halfway finished with level E, and am wondering about level G (geometry)? Do many people use this, and does anyone have any feedback on it?
We tried it and found it very frustrating. We moved on to Life of Fred, Fractions, and Decimal and Percents. This was all that I felt wasn’t solidified from RS before moving on to VT algebra.
I’ve used The Geometric Approach with 5 children. It is designed for the child to do independantly. It is a challenging program as it required the child to think and apply what they are learning. It is good at helping the child discover and understand why they use a formula rather than just be told the formula and then given problems to solve.
Dr. Cotter explains at the beginning that the child may need to read through the lesson multiple times to understand. Even in this her goal is to help the child understand it’s O.K. if they need to read something more than once….it’s actually quite normal…especially as they get into higher academics. The lessons are not written in that they are hard to read….but rather a child may not gain all they need in one reading. Thus, they should read it again. The lessons are short….usually one page. So the reading isn’t very time consuming.
If my children had trouble with a lesson….it’s usually because they didn’t read it to understanding. They would miss some vital part because they may have skimmed over the words. Or thought they understood and didn’t go back and reread the lesson. Usually I would have them go back and read the lesson out loud to me….and I’d stop them periodically and ask them to explain what they are reading. Once I know they understood I then had them read the directions and then do the problems.
I appreciate that RS has a number you can call to get help with a lesson. [altough we worked really hard not to have to] Dr. Cotter also encourages the child to email her if they don’t understand and she’ll respond. At this level she prefers the child to communicate the problems rather than the parent.
My youngest child is about 10 lessons from completing this curriculum.
Thank you for the advice. My DS starts RS geometry this next year after we finish up his Book E. I am glad to hear this as he will need to become independent in his math.
