I was wondering if anyone could share their recipe for a deep conditioner or hair mask? I have a daughter with super curly hair that our normal conditioner (apple cider vinegar and water) doesn’t work on. I have to use a deep conditioner or the like to be able to comb throught it as I finish washing it. Also, anyone know of a good tangle free brush or comb? Thank you for any help!
you can use coconut oil, mashed avocado, vit. E oil, mashed banana and egg (depending on hair type you may want to use only the yolk or the whites as one is much more cleansing and the other more conditioning) alone or in any combination to make very conditioning masks or conditioners. You can also use various “herb teas” to help with detangling and nourishing. Google your daughter’s hair type, problem you are having and “homemade natural hair care recipes”. You should be able to come up with a pretty good start to putting together a nice hair care regimen for her that you like. One more thing that will help with detangling after washing, (my dd hair is long with loose curls and I used to have a BIG detangling problem!) give the hair a cool water final rinse. This helps smooth the hair shaft.
If you need more help, I can give you some recipes to try that I have made, but without being able to see your daughter’s hair and know exactly what you need, you may be better off experimenting a bit on your own. I find that any homemade hygiene product usually needs to be tweaked a little bit anyway for each person that uses it because their ph levels are different as well as problem areas, hair type, etc.
Also, just as a note, the apple cider rinse is not REALLY a conditioner, just a rinse that helps close the hair shaft’s cuticles and so it is smoothing. It also helps keep it residue free and shiny, etc. but it does not really condition. You need some sort of natural oil to get a true conditioning effect.
As far as combs and brushes, I have had good experiences with using natural bamboo combs and brushes. Anyone that I have recommended these to have had good experiences with them as well. If your dd hair is very curly (you prob. already know this) stick with a nice thick, wide toothed comb.
HTH! I have been experimenting on myself and my kids now for a couple of years and so I kinda like this stuff! In case you can’t tell! LOL!
My dd4 has very curly hair too. I have been experimenting for nearly a year trying to figure out what to do with her hair! Baking soda and vinegar weren’t conditioning enough for her. I absolutely cannot use shampoo of any sort on her hair. Not even the sulfate free natural type.
I found this cleansing conditioner co-wash by Nothing But that we use once a week to wash her hair. It is free of sulfates, parabens, mineral oil, etc. they also make a Curl Wake Up spray leave in conditioner we use to detangle on a daily basis.
For a deep conditioner I was using coconut oil and just braiding her hair and leaving it in. I found this organic olive oil hair lotion and it has made such a Huge difference in her hair! It is wonderful! We use it at night and braid her hair. Her hair is wonderfully soft, no frizz, and easy to comb with a wide toothed comb.
The coconut oil is the best “homemade” conditioner we found. Olive oil is very heavy and I recommend a cap or something to sleep in with that. Coconut oil absorbs faster and doesn’t come off make her pillow nasty at all.
My dd doesn’t have super curly hair, but her hair is wavy-curly and also VERY thick. As she’s gotten older, it’s become harder and harder to manage and fix, so I’ve been resorting to putting it in a ponytail everyday. Big mistake, because those pony tails have damaged and broken her hair. The apple cider vinegar/water conditioner the rest of us use isn’t working to detangle or repair her hair, so I have just started using this product called Wen. It is unlike any other shampoo/conditioner I’ve ever seen. It’s actually not a shampoo, but a cleansing conditioner. One of my good friends who has SUPER curly hair has used it for years, and her curls are gorgeous. She washes her hair every 3-4 days and you can see how healthy her hair is. There is even a comb on the website that’s recommended to use with the product.
I haven’t been using this long enough with dd to see any major differences yet, but her hair is much easier to pick out when it’s wet, and it’s softer overall. I’m big about no chemicals, and there really isn’t anything in this product that make me wince. No sulfates, no parabens, no detergents. And it smells amazing. So, while it may not be the most natural thing out there, it’s working for us. I’m still using the baking soda/apple cider vinegar on my hair with great results, but my dd’s hair is totally different from mine. I’m not sure where she got it!
Yes, it’s pricey, but you don’t use much and don’t use it everyday. Plus, it will probably be worth it to you and your dd as she gets older. I’m willing to invest to help my dd’s hair look healthy and beautiful.
I have extremely curly hair. It started looking a lot better after I read the book Organic Body Care by Stephanie Tourles. The book contains lots of recipes for homemade body and hair care products.
The author has very curly hair, too. She says it is very important never to use shampoo on curly hair. Just use conditioner and massage it in well to scalp and all of hair. I use conditioner by Nature’s Gate – usually the biotin conditioner. No parabens or other nasty ingredients, and very affordable. I buy mine at vitacost.com.
Just use a wide-toothed comb when the hair is wet. My hair is so much better following this plan.
Hope this helps!
