  • Military may move us soon to the Virginia Beach area. I will find out in the next week or so.  I know you have to test there. Can parents administer the tests? I have been spoiled with virtually no laws to follow and am nervous moving to a “harder” state. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Hello! We are living in central VA right now – we moved here at the end of Feb. Yes, parents can administer tests here. I don’t think the laws are hard to follow here at all – but this is the only state I have homeschooled in so I don’t have anything to compare it to. You have to notify your local superintendant by Aug. 15th that you will be homeschooling your child(ren) for the upcoming year. And then by the following Aug 1st you have to mail in proof that they scored aboved the 23 percentile (I think that’s the number) on any standarized test.

Here is a link to a great site for all the info you would need:

Let me know if you have any other questions!

    Thank You!! 🙂

Caroline – I strongly urge EVERY parent that homeschools to belong to the Homeschool Legal Defense Fund http://www.HSLDA.org  They give excellent summaries for the laws of each state from a legal perspective and should you ever get into any trouble (and it’s really not rare for CPS or DYFS to show up at the door of home educating families) you will have a FREE legal defense.  Here’s the summary of the laws for VA http://www.hslda.org/laws/analysis/Virginia.pdf

You actually do not HAVE to test your children – read carefully and see the exceptions (choosing option B – religious beliefs) or getting an evaluation letter from a certified teacher from ANY state.  That is a VERY abreviated analysis (i’m sure my husband – an attorney – would kill me for giving such a terse breakdown of VA’s homeschool laws), but it should at least spark your curiosity enough to read the HSLDA’s summary and then decide which homeschooling option, as well as which testing option best meet the needs of your family.

We are in VA – Williamsburg.  There is a wonderful yahoo group called Hampton Roads Homeschoolers.  We’ve only been here a year, but there is a great network here and tons of field trips, etc. – especially down by VABeach area.  Compared to other states, our testing here is pretty easy (IMHO).  We order the tests from seton and test in the spring.  It’s pretty easy to follow the HS laws here.
