Dd11 will be using the TOPS books next year and I would love a Christian reference book for her to look the topics up in and dig deeper. Is there anything out there like this? Something like the Usborne Science Encyclopedia but from a Christian point of view would be great! Thanks.
A lot of the Noeo Science programs use the Usborne Science Encyclopedia. It is Christian – but not strict interpretation of the Bible. Check it out here:
After reading these posts I just ordered World of Science AND World of Animals after checking them out myself on Amazon. The reviews are fantastic. I am soooo excited to have books to replace our Usborne books which we received through Sonlight. What great alternatives! Thank you ladies.
Sarah and Helen please tell me more about the World of science books (when you get them). I have been looking at Sonlight Science E and would much prefere using this. Wondering what else I would need with that….
Yes, TOPS books are used in Sonlight science; I’m not sure if it is exclusive to them or not. What specifically are you wanting to know about the Master Books science books? They are more of a reference resource than a curriculum. Both books include Genesis 1:1 in their introduction. My ds8 loves non-fiction science and I knew I would not have to worry about the contents of these books. They are thick books, about 250 pages each and have great photos. They do remind me of the Usborne Encyclopedia that Sonlight uses. I never bought that one. We had checked it out from the library, and I did not care for its secular views.
I think they are appropriate for reference for grades k-8, in my opinion. I bought mine at http://www.libraryanded.com for the best price, but I had a promotion for free shipping at the time. Otherwise, amazon’s free shipping may be the way to go.
thanks Sarah, from the description it looks like there are experiments and questions for the kids to answer. I thought maybe I can use that w/a couple of other books instead of doing Sonlight or another curriculum.
Doesn’t look like it from what you are saying. Still not sure what I will be doing but am thinking to get this book anyway…
I think you could make it work by using a living book or biography to go along with each section and use this as a reference or spine for more scientific information, then you could do some science experiments to go along with your topic, from section 7.
There are short bios. throughout the book, so you could read a biography for your living book. For example, in section 2 on forces and motion, there is a short paragraph about Isaac Newton. There are more scientists in the section with a small paragraph intro. and you could also read more about them in another book: Hermann Helmholtz, Robert Hooke, Max Planck, Blaise Pascal, James Joule, Archimedes, Karl Benz, Frank Whittle, and Marie Curie. You could spend as little or as much time as you want to here.
Great ideas Sarah. This sounds like something we may be interested in doing. Perhaps we will utilize your suggestions as well as do the ‘Considering God’s Creation’ which we have already been enjoying this school year. I like the idea of taking time on one subject matter in science and enjoying it using World of Science, a living book and Considering God’s creation. Thanks!
Thank you Sarah, I think my kids would prefere living books than biographies, I’ll have to look into that. Do you think it would be worth it to get other books for experiments or are these good enough?
Maybe I should just get the book and stop asking you so many questions lol!!
Helen I considered considering God’s creation but my oldest will be in 6th grade in September so not sure it is worth it for just one year. I guess I could hold on to it until my kindergardner gets bigger….
thowell thank you for starting this tread!
