I am searching online for information on caring for roses, but I don’t know what sites to choose from what comes up in a search….too many choices! I was wondering if anyone here grows roses & has some good suggestions for library books or go-to websites about rose care.

Specifically, I have a climbing rose that has gone downhill in the past month. It only had a couple of buds & only one bloomed. One of the canes got very dark, the foliage disappeared or dwindled to nearly nothing, and the buds turned very pale & never opened. I pruned that one way back but didn’t know what to treat it with, so I’m pretty sure the whole bush is infected with whatever it is because the other couple of canes lost their foliage too.

I’m very sad about this because this was my late mother’s rosebush and I was hoping to save it….not sure if I can do that now, so any recommendations of books & websites you have would be appreciated.

I wish. I have a black thumb! I’m sorry about the the loss though.

Thank you. What little I have read tells me I might have to dig it out and start over with a new rose bush.

Which begs the question: what does one send to a funeral for a rose bush??? Laughing

Lilies? ….sorry about that, I couldn’t help it!

So sorry about your Mother’s roses! So sad! I know I felt bad when I had to leave behind my late grandfathers peony when we moved.

I am not sure of what to do, but I know that a couple times my parents have had to cut their rose bushes right down and let them re-grow all over again. As long as the roots are still healthy. They don’t have any climbing roses, though, not sure if it’s the same. If you have a good nursery nearby you could take in a cutting and see what they think it is and what they recommend for it, though.

    Hope it works out alright,

Miranda, that is a great idea. I never thought of taking a cutting to a local nursery for advice. (I guess I’m too used to shopping for garden supplies at the “big box” stores where the staff might not know much about roses.) I could probably get a close-up photo on my tablet to show them.

    Thanks.
