We have recently listened to “The Giver” by Lois Lowry. It was very interesting for us. I know there are 3 sequels, with a third in the works.
Does anyone have any experience with the sequels and if so, could you tell me your thougts and opinions on them? Are they worth reading? Is the any content that I should censure or of which I should be wary?
I read them all about 2 years ago. I thought they were excellent. Each has a slightly different variation on the theme started in the Giver (you meet other villages with different ‘ideas’) and then it’s all tied up at the end. I don’t remember there being anything to censure but it does get a bit darker (not gross dark but ‘times are getting harder and they’re facing a crisis’ dark), but it was a few years ago and my brain is old. The end of the last book is very sad. Make you cry like a baby sad.
I really enjoyed the entire series and was sad that I found them as an adult. I wish I had read them when I was younger. I do plan on having my kids read them as I think they are very thought-provoking and provide great opportunities to discuss distopia without being gory.
They are pretty fast reads for most adults so if you’re at all concerned check them out and read them before you give them to the kids.
I may give them a good skimming through so I can tell how dark is too dark for their ages. They’ve both read some pretty intense stories about the HOlocaust. The baby being injected was disturbing-it reminded my son of the experiments on people during the Holocaust and we talked again about eugenics.
I know mine would be interested in the series further. We have a tendency to dig into ideas and things deeply; enjoy the intellectual and spiritual meat in our discussions of the possible outcomes in the plots that science fiction provides.
BTW, she’s coming out with a fourth book; it’s supposed to come out this year.
