I found this word study based spelling program through an old post. My dh and I are seriously thinking that we will be using this for our dd 10 for the rest of this year and if all goes well through the rest of the program and for our younger kids. I know that this is not CM but after much trying, thought, prayer, discussion and research I think this may be our best bet for what we need. I will also be doing some remedial phonetic instruction using The Logic of English phonograms/method as well. Has anyone used Spelling Mechanics or seen it, etc. I would really appreciate some feedback on this program. I tried bringing up the original post a few days ago but no one responded, so I am trying this.
I had looked at Spelling Mechanics from that thread, too. While I really liked the word study concept they described, I ultimately decided not to use it after looking over the samples. It was a tough decision, as so much of it looked like it would be great for ds. But they included activities that required picking out the correctly spelled word from groups of misspelled words. Knowing how confusing that would be for ds, I had to look around and find something else. Maybe that would not be a problem for your kiddos, but thought I’d mention why I decided not to use it. We are currently trying SpellWell, purchased from Christianbooks.com. It has him using the words in various contexts, sorting, and such, without putting any misspelled words into the mix. We’re only on Lesson 3, so it remains to be seen whether it will give us the desired retention and application in his own writing.
I appreciate your feedback. I was hesitant about the same “misspelled words” activities as well. I am really not sure if that would help or hinder my dd. so far I have done the CM way of trying to only have her be exposed to the correctly spelled words and that has not really seemed to help her at all. I had thought that I would at least try that activity and if it seems to just confuse or frustrate then I would simply cover up and skip those activities throughout the rest of the program. After homeschooling for a few years I have started to feel more comfortable using a program to fit my family by leaving out and adding in as I feel the need.
The only other thing that I feel wary about is the general layout and set up of the program itself. It seems that it is one of those things that can be confusing at first and may be a bit of work to get it set up and implemented properly until it finally “clicks” and then it all makes sense! Right now, it seems somewhat confusing to me! But my dh said he would help me if I needed it! LOL! I am pretty sure I will! HA!
Well, it doesn’t seem to be a program that many have used yet, so you may be the only person that I am able to get any feedback from on this. So thank you for your thoughts!
