Hello All!
This is my 3rd year homeschooling but my first year with SCM. We are in Upstate NY, and I am curious how I should write my IHIP’s. Do I list the books we’ll cover by each topic? I want to give them what they need without too much detail (obviously!) I know this may seem silly, but I want to be sure to do it right without having them come back at me for more info. Up until now I have had no issues, but I was using a more formal curriculum which makes the IHIPs easier!
Any advice would be appreciated!

Also, if you have any ideas to share regarding the Nature notebook – I’d love to hear them. Is it a plain lined spiral notebook or a sketch book or a binder…. Or my choice totally!!!

Well, with the forms I fill for the government (not NY), I am as general as possible…
For Nature Notebooks – entirely up to you. I think a sketchbook makes a good choice.

Hey Suzanne! We are in upstate New York as well. I’ve been homeschooling 4 years now and I always use this for my IHIP without any problems:

I just adjust it to fit what we are learning. That blog also has sample Annual reports, letter of intent and quarterly reports that I use as well. Just scroll down, and the links are on the right hand side.
Nature Notebooks, we use a lined marble notebook and it works fine. But I think that as the kids get older I would switch to a sketch book.
Where in upstate NY are you? We are in the finger lakes region.

Wow. What a great resource you have provided!
Your IHIP is a lot more detailed then I send my (non-NY) government….
Here is a sample for grade 2 of what I’ve sent (I do use the official forms)
Mathematics – Mathematics Enhancement Programme (CIMT) Level 1b
Language Arts – Reading Independantly and with me various classic books. Cursive Writing
Social Studies – World History – Roman 4AD to Renaissance. Canadian History – abt 1600-1713
Science – Reading about Birds and other subjects according to interest. Nature Study
Other – YMCA Swimming Lessons (Seal Level) Music – Suzuki Violin book 1 Foreign Language: German
My reports are similar.
This way, I can change specific books without worrying that the “homeschool police” might get me.
Again – that is what I put for my government and what is required by yours may be different – but I got advice a long time ago (and I believe it is HSLDA’s recommendation) to give as little info as possible. Acutally, I could probably put less under the “Other” category…

NY can be a bit tough, depending on your school district. Ours is pretty easy. I don’t think they even look at the IHIP half the time to be honest. I felt this way gave me freedom to teach what I wanted to teach while being free to chose the books and resources I wanted to, without lying or giving false information.

NY is more time consuming than anything really. My distrcit has been fantastic up until now, and I just want to be sure I do the IHIP’s right with this new style of schooling.
