So, anybody planned this out yet?  I love the looks of it. Just trying to decide how much to implement w/my 7th grader who will also be doing “Write with the Best” where some of the same aspects are covered.  I’m thinking of just analyzing 2 books this year, maybe 3 next?  Do you think that’s enough for 7th grade? I’m hoping that after doing one or two the thinking process will start to naturally happen w/other books that I don’t require all the writing.

Also, it would be most handy to simply print out the whole guide for every book analyzed…but not sure I want to use that much ink:)  Just wondering what some of you other users were doing. Thanks for any input!  Blessings, Gina

I’m curious, too.  I am not planning to use this until next year (7th) but depending on how the year goes I may slip a short novel study in the final term of 6th.  I would like to hear how people are doing it with this age group.  I was thinking one study per term next year.

Yeah, one study per term probably wouldn’t be too much.  I’m just trying to be cautious since other subjects are stepping up for dd next year….

I will be experimenting with this as well, this year. Ds will also be in 7th. I plan to do the study with each lit book we read this year, BUT since ds has on his list Robinson Crusoe, Tom Sawyer and Kidnapped, I can’t see ANY of those being done in 4 weeks, so we’ll be spreading it out.  We’ll also be doing other writing (Jump In) so I think we’ll spread the assignments out as long as it takes to read the book and just do days that are easy writing days on Jump In.  But I’m going to have to see how it goes and evaluate as we go.  I don’t want to overwhelm my 7th grader, either, as we “step up” for the middle school years.  We plan on being very, very flexible while using the guide.

Bookworm, I’ll have to check back w/you after you get your feet wet:)  Yeah, I assign the ‘tougher’ books for school time (nightime free reads are lighter) and it would be too much for us to finish a book and a whole guide in a month.  Maybe we’ll just have to do the first one and see how it goes:) Thanks! Just curious, what would you say is the benefit of a study guide versus narration. Dd12 loves to read but hates study guides so I was planning to skip them even though MFW, which we are using, recommends them. Just wanted to check the benefits. Thanks!

This isn’t a typical study guide.  This is more of a guide gently nudging students to do beginning literary analysis, something they are going to need in college.  This is not an “in place of narration” at ALL, but something to do when a child can already do written narrations (IMO this is how it would best be used) and is ready to begin working towards essays analyzing the literature read.  Which may or may not be quite CM, but still is a skill expected in college.  As with any “study guide”,  it would best be used in a CM household by using the useful parts flexibly.

Have any of you ladies been able to give this a good test yet?  Wondering how it’s going.

Curious how it’s going for others, too. Please share:) This is on our schedule, but yet to be done due to an extended vacation and short trips to see my sick father-in-law…hope to start next week!!!
