Modern History through Canadian Eyes: A Canadian History Guide for all Ages. If anyone has used this, I would like to know if it is as CM friendly as it looks on the Website. Is it going to be a lot of work? Did you choose to supplement with other literature not scheduled or recommended in the guide? If so how did that work? I would like to use the Dear Canada series as well. Do you think these are compatible?
I will have a 3rd and 1st grader to start teaching Canadian History to in the fall. Eventually I would like to make a four or five year rotation of Canadian studies Modules. Set up similarily to the SCM history modules. I love the way they teach the history of the world using these modules I just don’t want to wait until the last modules to start teaching Canadian History ( where it says to do American history). I would like to take a couple years to really dive deeper into Canadian history. Chronologically of course. Then when we reach present times I would like to take a couple more years to study government and cultures of the different peoples as well as study the geography a little more closely. I think this study guide would be a good start to setting up something like this for our family but I really don’t want to waste time with it if someone has had experience with it and knows that it won’t work for what I want to do. Of course on the website for this resource they only talked about how great it was. And I could not find any sample pages or lessons or anything like that. I would like some real reviews on this resource.
Wish I could help, but I’ve been having a difficult time trying to find good resources for Canadian History… I have a son that is moving into a Year 2.
Well, I can’t help you with that book, but I will tell you what we are doing – Donna Ward’s books (Canada, My Country and Courage and Conquest) supplemented with Great Canadian Lives, for the 6 & 8 year olds. My First History of Canada with the 10 & 12 year olds, supplemented with the Great Stories of Canada series (these are great, everyone listens to them). Pierre Berton puts out some decent Canadian History books also, but I believe they are meant for older kids.
Just a note with Dear Canada – our sons don’t care for them. The ones we tried were heavy on fiction and light on history – the girls loved them.
I hope that helps a little.
