How do you handle making copies of the Visits To books? Do you make a complete copy for each child or do you only copy select pages for each student? I’m thinking of the pages that show where the new countries are or the Material World questions. Also, are you using the questions for discussion or do they complete them on their own?
Also, how involved are your younger students? One of my DC turns six in October, so she’d still technically be a K’er. This past year we used maps from MOH and I went ahead and printed a copy for her, but she basically used them as coloring pages. I know she’ll like the readings and she’ll probably put together the corresponding Geopuzzle, but what should I expect from map drills at that age?
We used Visits to America this year. We used the questions throughout strictly as discussion.
As for the younger kids, they listened to all of the readings and participated in, as they were able, the discussion questions.
I only made copies of the select pages for my younger children. I actually used them as tracing pages. I taped the copy up on the window and taped a blank piece of paper over it.
I had my 5YO and 6YO trace the shape, and label some major landmarks. So, for example, when we did the state of Texas, I had them outline Texas, trace the Rio Grande, label Mexico, the Gulf of Mexico, and Austin. After that they used the page they made as a coloring page.
As for map drills, I had them use Sheppard Software once or twice a week. Later in the year, when they knew all of the United States, I printed out a large blank map of the US and had them label each state, color it in, and then I laminated it for them to use as their own placemat.
So, at the end of the year my 5YO and 6YO can list all the states and capitals, the countries of Canada and Mexico, and a few major bodies of water. (The capitals they learned by memorizing the Wakko States and Capitals Song. They love that.)
We enjoyed the study. If I choose to do another one, I think I may have my older kids do notebooking as we go through it, and continue doing similar activities as we did this year with the younger two.
We used Visits to the Middle East in co-op with 50+ kids ages 6-17. We printed the entire books for simplicity, but did not use all the pages. The material world type pages were discussion only. We condensed the study to 24 weeks, so we skipped and combined some of the map drill. I would strongly suggest ALL Mapping pages for each child. The two page spread is ease at its finest! These are fabulous!
