Another question about Apologia

I am trying to decide between General Science and the new Chemistry and Physics book for my soon to be 7th grader.  I think the new book would cover many of the topics he is interested in, and many of the other moms in our homeschool group have told me not to be afraid to wait until 8th to start General Science.

So, has anyone seen a table of contents for the Chem/Physics book?

If I were to go with Gen Science, would I need the student notebook?  I would be looking at getting the audio CD as he is an audio learner. Also, are the things needed for the labs really easy to find or would I be better off getting the lab kit?

We are through the first three modules and, so far, we have not had any trouble procuring the supplies for the labs. I have not looked ahead at the other modules. I know there is a full list on Apologia’s website.

I did buy the notebook for my daughter because I could sense that she really wanted to “own” some of her schoolwork. After several years of having to wait until I was done with little ones to get to her school work and dealing with delays and interruptions which are just part of a normal household, she really wanted some things where she could work independently. So what we do is this… in the morning I write her assignment on her board and then she does it at any time of the day that she feels like it. The schedule in the front of the notebook tells her exactly what she needs to accomplish for that lesson and then she can check it off. I am also reading the book myself and doing my own written narration so that I know what she’s learning. On Friday evening we have a regularly scheduled family meeting where she fills in the rest of us on what she’s learned. Because I am reading the book also, I can question her and also provide clarification when she’s not understanding. I am not sure that she could be working so independently without the notebook, so, for our family, it was worth it. I think it would also depend on your child. I am pretty sure that my son would despise the notebook and would rather just do written narrations in his composition book and discuss the “On Your Own” questions aloud.

I don’t know anything about the chemistry and physics book, but I plan to look into it. Life of Fred has an elementary physics book now and I’ve wondered how the two might work together. I will be very interested to read what others have to say in response to your questions.

I’m going to go ahead and use Gen. Science next year for my 13 yr. old. DOn’t know if my dd will be able to or not-I’ll cross that bridge when I get there.

Anyway, I may get the Chem/Phys. book for him just for him to browse through in his free time (he likes dong that with past Apologia books), but I really want to get him started on the Gen. Sc. so that if it takes a little longer than a year, he still can get to Physics by 12th and may be an elective, too.

I’m not getting the lab kit after all. I was originally going to get the smaller one from Homeschool Tools, but then I printed out the supplies list and decided it was so easy, and I already had quite a bit of it, that I’m going to buy things over the next 3-4 mths.

@pslively, is the notebook you have the same as the Notebooking Journal??  I plan to have my 9th grader use Apologia Physical this coming Aug. and I want him to use the Notebooking Journal to keep up better looking “notebook.” He’s been using a spot in his binder tabbed Science and adds his OYO answers there, etc., but I really feel having the Journal would be beneficial.  I don’t know if there is a Journal for Gen. or if they only have the Lapbooking resource.

Either way, I think the $10 spent on the Journal will be worth it for us.

And, I plan to do as Rachel is and start gathering supplies for the experiments asap.

It is called Exploring Creation with General Science Student Notebook, and it has the same cover as the textbook. It’s the one that comes directly from Apologia. The samples are on their website. I know it cost me $30+ at Mardel so I am not sure we’re talking aabout the same thing. Now I am curious.

I found the 1st edition physical science lap book journal PDF download for $8.99 @ Christian book dot com. Sorry I can’t send a link right now. And I don’t remember if it said lap book journal or notebook journal. I do have to print the pages but our church allows for printing at an incredibly reasonable price. That’s what I plan to do for my ds. I need to gather supplies, make a list for mythbuster shows, maybe one or two bios, etc.

As far as lab supplies, I just bought everything I could at the beginning of the year and put them in a large tub for dd to grab when needed. She’d just ask where common household items were as needed. I just couldn’t bring myself to pay for the kits when I’d still need to get more supplies anyway:)
