I have been studying the CM method more in the past few days, and was wondering if someone could tell me how best to do American history with my 2 children. As I posted before, I have been using Winter Promise American Story 1, but the kids are not retaining anything and do not enjoy what we are reading. I have to say, though that it is very frustrating because we are jumping around so much between different books everyday. Yesterday we had 8 different books to read small snippets from and none of them seem to follow a pattern that makes sense to us. Plus the notebooking pages that are scheduled for each week sometimes have nothing to do with what we are reading!?

I asked my daughter (age8) this moring if she could tell me anything about what we have been reading about in history. She said I loved reading Leif the Lucky and Pocahontas! Well, those are the d’Aulaire books we got from the library that did not even come with our curriculum!!!!

Should I just follow the chronology in my guide book and pick a few of the best books to read to them? Is there a list somewhere online that would tell me more about which books to choose?

    Thanks so much,

    Amanda

Oh…I found that the history model 5 has a list for me! I was looking at this all wrong! I did not realize that there are suggestions for all grades on each model! We already have a book of centuries too.

Okay, so now do I just read one book at a time and make entries in their book of centuries? There is no spine for this model. Could someone give me some idea of how it should be paced?

    Thanks,

    Amanda

Yes, take your time and enjoy one book at a time, making entires in your book of centuries. Ask for a narration after the day’s reading. Then the next time you’re ready to read, ask for a review of what happened last time.

Some of those books are longer than others, so I don’t really have a pace to recommend right now. A lot of it would depend on how much you read each day. If you’re using the Grades 1-3 books, I would think you could get through them just fine if you read history three days a week. (But that’s just a guess.) Try it for a week of two and adjust as needed. Smile

    Thank you so much 🙂

I am so excited that I am finally able to see how this all works! As I am reading more and learning more about the Charlotte Mason method I am beginning to see how well this will all work for my family. My children have been teaching themselves using this method for a few years now LOL! 🙂

I am really excited and pray that it all works out as well as I think it will.

Are these books for the module 5 (grades 1-3) listed in the order that we should read them?

    Thanks,

    Amanda

Yes, the books listed in Module 5 should be pretty much in chronological order, or at least a logical order. Smile
