These threads about math/science lining up have me thinking:
My son is just starting MUS after switching from Math Mammoth. I find he is still struggling some with mastery in basic facts — he knows them, but doesn’t have the quick recall that proves mastery. I’m still not sure if it is a confidence thing or what. He is just finishing 5th grade, but his math is about two years behind. I figure this may rule him out for much of the higher math and sciences, but from reading this thread I am wondering if he’ll be able to tackle Gen Science in 7th if he is only able to get through Delta by then? I have been looking at holding off Gen. Science until 8th anyway, or do it over 2 years, but maybe I need to look at something else?
Well, there’s no reason to postpone general science. It requires little math. What you need is algebra before chemistry. Ideally he would be enrolled in biology at the same time as algebra. I wouldn’t worry about this just yet. Just work on his math skills now. You might have to consider doing something different in the way of schedules depending upon how he does in the math. You don’t know yet how quickly he’ll be able to move, so no sense worrying too much yet. One possible idea is doing Gen. Science in 8th and Physical Science in 9th while he works on math and hopefully being able to do biology and algebra then in 10th.
There IS an “ideal sequence” that many colleges like to see. But others care little. My own local high school only ever gets about a third of its students into college prep chemistry. Many of those kids DO go on in school. Remember a couple of things–it’s WAY better to really know the earlier stuff even if you get to the other stuff later; YOU decide when your child is “done” with school and ready to move on, and there is always the possibility of catching up a little at a community college and that’s OK. Don’t worry too much yet. There are lots of ways to get where you want to go.
