We have not tackled formal grammar of any kind here, so it is among one of my top priorities going into next year. The dabbling we have done shows me that my soon to be 4th grader is slightly stronger in this area. They have not resisted learning together in this area despite the fact that my older son is heading for 7th grade. So, I have a few options. One would be GWG, which seems to have good reviews, but I’m uncertain where to start them with that. Grade level maybe too advanced, especially for my older ds. Rod and Staff is an option, but again where to start. I haven’t the time to teach two different levels. Third option, and one I may have to look closer at because I’d forgotten it until now, is Winston Grammar. I know it is teacher intensive, but could we tackle it together in 30 minutes a day 3 times a week?
I found a program that I want to do on the Winter promise website w/my 7th grader next year but since we have not dome much grammar either we needed to catch up first.
We are doing grammar key over the summer.
It is online, very quick. My son spends about 10 minutes a day and my hope is that he will be done in 3 months. I was told that is about the max amount of time you need to finish it.
The only thing you need to do is make sure they are not just trying to guess the answers to get through it but understand how to find them.
Since you haven’t done anything formally yet and your kids have a base in oral narration, you may want to consider Charlotte Mason’s “First Grammar Lessons.” You can find it free on-line or get Karen Andreola’s revised and expanded edition, “Simply Grammar.” Karen outlines its use in her introduction. It’s both practical and effective, providing a strong foundation in a way that is not confusing or too abstract for the student (or mom).
Warmly,
Richele
