Dana – do you use her site regularly?  Two friends and I followed one of her plans… about two years ago and I’d say we only like about half of the recipes – the other half were… not good.  I have been MUCH more selective in my freezer cooking since, and her site, was the catalyst for getting my friends and I doing this on a regular basis, so it’s very helpful that way… perhaps she does a better job of screening now?  I haven’t been on for quite a while.  Of course, JUST last night I made the chicken marsala that I found on her site that very first month of freezer cooking and it is restaurant worthy!  Let me know if you’ve done any months of recipes where you loved everything!

    Thanks!

No actually I haven’t. I love the concept of once a month cooking but haven’t gotten all my duckies in a row enough to actually accomplish it. 🙂 I love the idea of someone else doing the thinking for me along the lines of what meals to serve because I tend to get into ruts. I figure the recipes can be tweaked. But if half are bad then… That would be frustrating!

Well, I don’t know if half are ALWAYS bad, but the month we did, they certainly were, in fact one was SO bad that it’s a long running joke for us now and we still have the bag of frozen chili and it mysteriously will show up in one of our freezers after a playdate with the family who previously had it!

If you want I could send you some of the recipes that all three of our families have enjoyed – ones that we know freeze well.  I’d say start small with 2 weeks worth of meals – pick 7 recipes that sound good and then double each one – you’ll have 14 meals for the freezer and it’s totally possible to do on your own.

I’ve tried several of her recipes and they were good.  I know that she now has some moms that try out all the new recipes she is going to post.  I don’t know if she did this before.  Honestly, I haven’t done a lot of freezer cooking, but I want to.  Her site has been extremely helpful in trying to start doing this.

I read the once a month cook book years ago and it had aome good recipes. I decided to do the concept with what we regularly eat. I found that on mondays we were wanting to eat Mexican food–Taco’s , alternating every other week with chicken; and beans to make it go further. Tuesday- We do Italian– We usually have Spegetti. I sometimes alternate this with Lasagna or Manacotti to keep it from being to boring. This depends on the budget too. Wed.- We do Chinese, a stirfry, usually something with rice. My husband makes this with extra rice so we have it for breakfast the next day. We use to do Pizza and Chicken Nuggets on Wed. Awana’s Night. Now we do that on Friday’s for Movie Night.. Thursday is our Soup Night. We do Potato, one week, Chili the next, Onion, or veggie, and the last usually chicken and dumplin.   I am recently going threw a budget change again and decided I am going to Make my weekend food all on Friday morning…. It will be Turkey one weekend, Beef/deer roast the next, Chicken the next and Ham the last. This will make lunches and soups for the rest of the weekend. I was going to go back to the once a month cooking but my freezer is packed and I don’t have the room to make and freeze. So, I decided to make out a monthly food calendar and use the leftovers for lunches and soups ect… That way I am using my leftovers and I can get 3 meals out of one turkey dinner. 3 meals or more out of one ham or roast. I hope this is some food for thought for some of you doing the once a month cooking but gave up or don’t have the time or room.   Blessings

Love the fact that she has a gluten-free menu.  Thank you!  Menu planning is something I’ve been trying to work on recently after all our dietary changes, so I do appreciate this.

Do you remember which recipies you didn’t like???

It looks like a cool idea, and I do like the planning already figured out… I figure I can add in my own recipies once I get the hang of it….

I haven’t been on her site in a long time and it DOES look a lot different – I think back in 2009 she was doing all the recipes herself and i’m not sure that she even tried them before she posted them!  I can’t say that for sure, but it’s possible because several of the recipes contained mistakes that were corrected through comments from readers.  Here’s the link to the month we did…. http://onceamonthmom.com/september-menu-grocery-list-instructions-labels-and-podcast/

Carole’s chili – was the infamous chili that none of us ate the second batch of (we did two of everything)

The deconstructed brocolli and cheese was not good – but that could have been the bread crumbs we used – it  might have been better with seasoned bread crumbs, but no guarantees.

The black beans and rice was fine, but we didn’t really feel like it was a good fit for any of our families – not really a meal… more like a side – would be good to take as a side dish to a mexican themed pot luck.

Porkchops not good (could have been that we used the extra thick costco porkchops, maybe thin ones would have better – but VERY paprika”y”

We have a better ziti recipe we’ve found since, this one is not memorable.

Stroganoff – I think my family liked it but the other two families did not.

Mexican cornbread casserole – not good

Don’t remember the chicken and chilis…

What I DO REMEMBER and SAVOR – is the Chicken Marsala – YUM!!!!   Make it tonight!
