This is my first year homeschooling and I am a little confused about what I need to have turned in for each child’s annual evaluation. We live in Florida and the law states we must turn in an annual evaluation for each child or have them take a national test. Can I have them take the CAT online? Would that be acceptable?
I’m pretty sure that Florida law states that the national test must be administered by a certified teacher. That said, my county did accept a CAT test that I administered to my child before I realized that it had to be a certified teacher. The best thing to do is to call your county superintendent office and ask them if that would be acceptable.
We prefer to have an annual evaluation with a certified teacher. It’s so easy because there are so many homeschool moms out there who have their teacher’s license. We found a great evaluator and have been using her for 13 years now. We look forward to our annual evaluation and enjoy the visit.
The important thing is to find an evaluator who will hold you to Florida law and not her own personal standards. I think FPEA.com has a list of approved evaluators. The evaluator should simply look over your child’s work portfolio and your educational log, talk to each of you a bit, and then give you a signed form stating that you are in compliance with Florida law.
Last year we were having car trouble and were unable to see our regular evaluator because she is an hour’s drive away. I found an evaluator online and I simply had to scan several examples of my child’s work and my educational log into my computer and email them to her. She then made a phone appointment with me to call and speak to both myself and my daughter for a few minutes. Then she emailed me the form and I simply printed it out and turned it in.
Another option is to find a local Classical Conversations group. They usually offer end of the year testing to homeschoolers in their communities.
Hope that helps and congrats on getting through your first year of homeschooling! 🙂
We are in Florida and did our first eval in January. We found an certified teacher who does virtual evaluations all over the whole state. I scanned in copies of work from the beginning of the year and the end, plus a book list and a syllabus, and we had a 5 minute conference call with her a couple days later. She sent us the paperwork, which we sent certified mail to our school board office. Done! I recommend this route.
