I’m wondering when would be a good time to introduce my kids to Anne? Should I do it as a RAL, or have it be one of my daughters lit suggestions for the upcoming year? Do you feel it makes a good RAL, or one that would be better off enjoyed on your own? My oldest is 9, going into 4th grade.
I remember meeting Anne for the first time when I was in 6th grade. My teacher that year LOVED Anne. I admired my teacher and still remember her enthusiasm. If it hadn’t been for her, I’m not sure when, or even if, I would have ever read Anne. Since then, I’ve fallen in love with Anne myself and L.M. Montgomery in general. I’d love for my kids, especially my daughters, to fall in love with her stories and don’t want to rush it, but I’m just so excited! 🙂

I remember reading the Anne books when I was around 5th grade….I can’t remember who introduced me to them. And then, the movies came out and I LOVED them! (Well, except that they didn’t follow the books exactly – which always bothers me about books made into movies.)
Our daughters are currently 11, 10, 8, and 6 years old. And I tried to read Anne of Green Gables aloud to them – but couldn’t! The sentences were just too long *L*.
So, we listened to a version on LibriVox – and enjoyed it. It was a dramatic reading (different voice for each character). Then we watched my old VHS tapes of the movies and then listened to Focus on the Families’ Radio Theatre version sometime later. (This was all spread out over a year or two.)
My girls have also enjoyed the Tales from Avonlea movies, which include characters from more of L.M. Montgomery’s books.
And now that I’m thinking about all this, perhaps we ought to read aloud another of Montgomery’s books. My personal favorite is The Blue Castle. But I’ve always enjoyed Kilmeny of the Orchard and The Tangled Web and Magic for Marigold, too. (I’ve read all of those several times over the years, even into adulthood! *L*)

If you have an Audible membership, Barbara Caruso does a wonderful job on the audio book! I agree that it makes a tough read aloud.
BTW, we have a cat named Marilla. ?

We are doing this as our read aloud right now and using the Karen Savage read aloud on librivox through loyalbooks.com. (free) We tried the dramatic version / many voices version first and didn’t care for it as much. My children and I are really enjoying it!

One of my greatest joys is to read aloud and Anne of Green Gables is one of my favorite books to read aloud! I first read Anne to my daughter when she was 10 or so and I continued to read it at least once a year until she was 13. She now reads it to herself once a year or so. Anne is a great favorite in this house! She is one of my all time favorite literary characters.
I think 9 is a fine age for Anne and I also highly recommend reading it aloud so that you can share the experience with your daughter the first time around.
We have the movie and the whole series of Road to Avonlea that Karen mentioned above and we watch all of those each year as well. They are so much fun! We would love to visit P.E. Island for ourselves some day.

You could check your public library for the audio book. I agree that it is difficult to read aloud. That surprised me because, growing up, I had read the books many times and practically had the movie script memorized! My daughter is 10 and she hasn’t completely read the first book on her own. I think she is intimidated by the length.

We loved it as a read aloud. I think it was the first “more difficult” one we read aloud several years ago. We read the whole series aloud. I wouldn’t have wanted to miss doing it together.

We read this aloud for our homeschool book club a couple months ago (more than 20 kids ages baby to high school, an even mix of boys and girls). Sometimes it was a bit wordy for the kids, but I just made sure to keep our readings short and begin them while the kids were eating so they were occupied. In the end everyone loved Anne. 🙂 Even the boys.

Our family just got back from a 28 day trip across country and we listened to the first 3 books of anne this way. We all just loved them and we split the first 2 movies into 4 movie nights because its so long. we just love the “Anne girl!” ages: 14 yo boy, 2- 10 yo old girls and 7 yo boy. When we had movie night pulled 2 neighbor houses into it. So 12 people loved it and we couldn’t wait to get back together to resume! Martha
