A few weeks ago there was a discussion about the movie of Anne of Green Gables. A few people mentioned that the PBS movie was true to the book. I rented the movie from the library. I saw that it was a Kevin Sullivans production, but I didn’t see anything about PBS. It starred Megan Follows, Colleen Dewhurst, and Richard Farnsworth. Is this the PBS movie?
Funny to read this as I’m in the middle of watching the second movie. I love #1 and #2. #3 isn’t my favorite at all. I think it is about time to get my oldest daughter to read Anne of Green Gables…
This is my all time favorite movie (Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea, I too didn’t like the 3rd and don’t remember the name)……….and my favorite book(s). My plan was to wait till dc (ages5&3) were old enough to read the books before I showed the movie, but I LOVE the movie so much I couldn’t help but play it a couple of weeks ago when it was a hot day with nowhere to go and the kids needed some settling. They “said” they didn’t like it, cuz they are used to cartoons, but when I tried to turn it off they begged me to keep it playing and seemed to enjoy it…..I would question if they were really my kids if they didn’t like the movie, LOL. Can’t wait for them to be patient enough for us to read the books together.
I didn’t even know there was a 3rd. IMO, #2 is good, but it wasn’t true to the books? But maybe it’s been too long since I’ve read the books and seen the movies again… #1 is AWESOME! 🙂
#3 is a good flick if you know nothing about the books. If you’ve read the books, the third movie will make you mad LOL. The timing’s all wrong, and the story is a drastic spin on Rilla of Ingleside-not even recognizable, more like inspired by…but barely. Again, if you’ve never read the books, or can remove yourself from what you know about the books and characters, you might enjoy the book just as a WWI love story.
# 2 isn’t true to the books, but if you know the stories (Anne of Avonlea, Anne of the Island, Anne of Windy Poplars) and characters well enough, you can definitely see how Kevin Sullivan merged them to create a cohesive sequal, while maintaining the integrity of L.M Montgomery’s characters and intentions. It’d be really hard to make enough sequels to fulfill all that happened in all of the books- in my opinion anyway. I love both 1 and 2, knowing that the first is a very good representation of the book, and the second takes artistic license. I’ve loved these since childhood, and have read the books- all of them- several times.
Also, if you’ve read any of L.M Montgomery’s other books, you might like the Road to Avonlea Series. They were available at our Library in Omaha, and you might be able to find them. Many of the stories are inspired by the books The Story Girl, The Golden Road, Chronicles of Avonlea, and Further Chronicles of Avonlea. My whole family likes those shows too. They used to be on the Disney Channel….but times have changed, haven’t they
Ah, that is why I don’t feel #2 followed the books – I haven’t read all the books!
Yes, Road to Avonlea is great too. (TV Series). It is well done, and I’d love to have the set on DVD. (not sure if it is on DVD.) There is another series “Wind at my Back” written during the depression years that I’ve seen a number of episodes of that looks good – but you really have to watch in order or you get lost… I think it is from the same person but not 100% sure.
Yes, the “Ann movies” with Megan Follows are a favorite here too! I think LillyLou gives a good, detailed explaination about the 3 movies. The 2nd one is great because for me, I wanted more of Ann’s story; the 3rd one is just a good movie focusing on WWI time. Enjoy them!
Also, another enjoyable and more recent movie with Megan Follows as the mother, “Booky and the Secret Santa” set in the 1930’s.
I too, Love the Anne movies and have enjoyed them several times with my now grown daughter. She lives in NZ now and we just had a conversation about finding ‘kindred spirits’ wherever we are. However, my younger daughter isn’t at all interested in the movie. She is 11, we have read all 8 books out loud and she is half way through reading them herself. When I asked her why she didn’t want to watch the movie she replied ” mom, no one could make this as good as it is in my mind!” She said the same thing about the Little house shows when she was younger. Gave me a chuckle, and a smile- she usually is all over movies etc..
Thanks for all the replies. I have yet to really watch all through. My dd is 7 y.o. and loves Anne just on the ones we watched. Grandmother taped the movie when it was shown on PBS several years ago and gave to her recently. However, not all were taped and some of it was taped over. Went to the library and one of the tapes is bad and couldn’t play it. Oh well, I just have to break down and buy it.
One more question. I wished I thought of this earlier. Has any one listened to the audio of Anne or Focus on the Family Radio Theater of Anne? If so, what is your opinion? Before I start reading the books, I thought I would dd listen to the audios.
I just listened to Anne of Green Gables for free on Librivox. They have several different free versions, I listened to the one that was a dramatic reading with multiple people reading for all of the various characters. I just downloaded Anne of Avonlea read by someone else and am on the second chapter. So enjoying listening to these old favorites again :o)
