Next school year we will be studying Ancient Rome for our history. I am trying to solidify our literature list –                       books for read-a-louds and books for independent reading. For those of you who have already studied this time period which ones are “must haves” ?  Which titles did your family enjoy the most as a read-a-loud ? Which titles did your kids enjoy for independent reading?  My kiddos are 11 & 9 .

    Thanks for any suggestions 🙂

We’re currently reading A Triumph for Flavius. It’s quite short, 60ish pages I think? I would check but it’s mysteriously disappeared since I read it yesterday.

I scour several home school book lists and then I go through and check reviews at several sites and I only keep the best of the best to use here. So far, year 4 and we have only stopped 2 books that I can recall and those ended up being substitutions through our library because they had removed the book I wanted from their shelves by the time we were ready for it.

Anyway, my kids are 11 & 12 and here is what I have selected for their year next year, but I have NOT read these yet and selected them based solely on them making other lists and having the best reviews.

    Hope it helps…..

    Ancient Rome:

Augustus Caesar World by Genevieve Foster

The Story of the Romans by Gueber

Mystery of the Roman Ransom by Winterfeld (this is continuation to Detectives in Togos, which we have already read and while it was a slow starter for us, ended on a high note, but my kids were 7 & 8 when we read it.)

    The Bronze Bow by Speare

    Silver Branch by Sutcliff

    The White Isle by Snedeker

    The Trojan War by Coolidge

Adam of the Road by Gray

    Illustrated books:

    City: Roman Planning by McCauley

    Roman Coliseum by Mann
