Okay….we are going through module 2 (Ancient Greece) for history this year. I am trying to use what I already have due to a very tight budget. I have on hand Oxford First Ancient History, Usborne’s The Greeks (Peach & Millard), and I have access to David Macaulay’s Mosque, Hungry Planet, and Material World.

It would seem easiest to just purchase the e-book 1st edition of Joshua through Malachi (the SCM module 1 guide), but I also would like to purchase Visits to the Middle East. How will I know when, where, and which lessons to schedule from Visits to the Middle East? And where would Mosque fit in?

Is there any way I can figure out how to schedule all of that without having to purchase both editions of the module 1 handbook? Also, I don’t have Famous Men of Greece at this point; would we miss too much if I just used Oxford along with The Greeks for both the 8th grader and 11th grader, and skipped the spine (Famous) altogether?

Too many decisions after midnight…..and school starts next week…..must….have….chocolate….

Sue, just do 1 lesson per week in Visits to the Middle East. The readings for that are scheduled within. The Visits books can really stand apart from modules without issue. For Oxford just break it up into how many pages or sections to cover per week by dividing total by number of weeks. You’ll be fine if you do this. I don’t care for Famous Men of too much. Maybe choose one biography to read. Check Main Lesson website or Yesterday’s Classics for ideAs.

My dd13 will be reading The Book of Ancient Greeks by Dorothy Mills and Julius Cæsar by Alfred Church. Here are more options, all online, http://www.mainlesson.com/displaybooksforgreece.php.

Don’t forget the Iliad and the Odyssey, audio is a help.

Sue – you can get Famous Men free as an online text from either mainlesson.com or heritagehistory.com. It is also available as an audio book from librivox.org. I really appreciated Famous Men more when I had read other books first that tied them into a comprehensive storyline.

Agree with Christie about the Visits to the ME. Just substitute the geography lesson in the guide for a lesson from the Visits book.

    I sent you a PM.

Thanks, everyone, for your suggestions and offers to help with the books. I think I can pull everything together properly while using what I already have. I had forgotten all about mainlesson.com even though I had looked at the site briefly a couple of years ago.

I LOVE this forum!!! I love its members!!!
