I’m wanting to switch out our current science curriculum (SCM Learning About Birds) and try something new with my 1st and 3rd grader starting in January! They are both highly interested in wanting to learn about the Human Body. I’ve been doing some research about what to use and am having trouble choosing between Apologia Anatomy and Guest Hollow. Can anyone recommend one over the other or share their experiences with either?
Both, initially, cost the same to start, but my concern with guesthollow is all the books needed. I’m planning on purchasing some, but I’m also hoping to borrow the majority from the library…which may or may not become cumbersome! We’ve used Apologia in the past…land animals…and even though it’s not designed to read like a textbook, it still felt “textbooky” to me!
Anyways…my brains a jumbled mess with trying to decide and I’m hoping someone can help make this decision easier for me! 😉

While I like Apologia’s elementary books the Anatomy one is the most advanced of the bunch. I would NOT use it with a 1st and 3rd grader personally. What about God’s Design for Science, just the green Human Body book? We’re using it right now alongside fun books from the library and enjoying it. (I’m using it with my 5th, 4th, 2nd, 1st graders, with the 4 younger boys tagging along with them, while my 9th grader uses Apologia Biology.)

I really like Apology Elementary, all, we have used, but agree the anatomy is really advanced. My friend used it last year for 1st and 3rd and her kids really got none of it, just over their head.
I plan to wait until my kids are older to try it out. We have done Astronomy, Botony, zoology 2 (this year). Astronomy was 2 years ago and the kids still talk about things they remember.

I’ve never looked into Guest Hollow science…Her high school biology course looks like a great possibility for next year!
We used 106 Days of Creation and Considering God’s Creation to cover anatomy. We didn’t get to it when we first did 106 Days, so we just did the anatomy portion of it over the summer. My DC really enjoyed making the large cut & paste body! I would think there are similar free printables you can find as well.
I also would avoid Apologia with the ages of your DC. I think AIG’s book alongside some of the Guest Hollow books could be fun…My DC prefer the AIG books as well, especially in the younger grades.

I got my things mixed up, I didn’t use it for anatomy, that we did as part of NOEO Biology but we used her Chemistry program, tweaking it. It was really good.

Would you suggest using the AIG book as a spine? Then adding in other books within the different topics as needed?

Yes, we like using God’s Design as a spine. Honestly, sometimes we just use the book itself, no supplements, and it is great. But when my kids are interested to go deeper or linger in a topic then I pull out more books from our shelves or from the library.

Maybe. Here is what you find in the teacher’s book:
1. A cd that has any reproducibles (worksheets, coloring pages, quizzes, things to print for experiments/demonstrations). You can live without it but if the text references printing something, like the skeleton to label, you won’t have it in the student book.
2. Answer key for the book. I don’t worry about having this, as I’m reading the text to the kids so I already know the answers to the questions and we don’t use the quizzes. But some people like it.
Another good thing to know is this: The cd contains the reproducibles for the entire curriculum (all color/theme books). So if you decide you don’t want the answer keys but end up getting other theme books later on you will have the reproducibles for them already on this cd. 🙂
