  • What ages/grades do you use Jr Analytical Grammar and Analytical Grammar? Would anyone care to share a “master plan” for this stuff? Do you some of you skip JR and just do the full program? What about their high school review program? What other grammar choices do you prefer?

With the recent thread on Jr Analytical Grammar, it’s got me thinking about these choices again. I don’t really like to do a grammar program until they are older, at least that worked well for my older crew — just do it, get it, and move on. Although I think this subject might be slightly less intuitive for my younger crew.

I’m not there yet, but our plan is to skip Jr. and go straight to the full AG around 6th grade.  My DD is burnt out on grammar just from 2 yrs. of EFFTC.  In fact, we didn’t even complete the 2nd book b/c she didn’t enjoy it, and I didn’t want her to lose her love of learning.  I told her for sure we would drop grammar this year in 4th grade, but I am planning to take off 5th grade too and skip AG Jr.  In the meantime, she can write stories as she wishes, write her pen pals, and do mad libs for fun.

I am another one who skips Junior AG.  My youngest child (5th grade)  uses Emma Serle’s books for language arts, and this provides a gentle introduction to grammar while keeping the material varied and interesting.  This has worked very well for us.

My plan is to start AG in 7th grade and complete it over two or three years along with other Language Arts materials.

One of my older daughters started AG last year as a 9th grader and completed 2/3 of the study (she wa also doing Lightning Literature and Spelling Wisdom for language arts, so I didn’t push for her to complete it all one year, though she could have if necessary.  She will finish it up this fall.

    🙂  HTH!

Both of these are good to hear — writing letters, mad libs, Emma Serl books — those are all things we do too. I think we’ll stay the course at least for now.

gcbsmommy…I’m curiious as to why you’re planning to have your 7th grader do AG whereas you had one of your olders start it in 9th grade. Any particular reason for the change? I think with my older ones they did a grammar focus in 7th/8th grades…which was nice because it left more time for other language arts things, lit analysis, etc. Just curious if there was a specific reason for your change.

Also, do your kids go through all of Primary and Intermediate Language Lessons, what’s the general grade range for your kids covering those? My kids do work from both books, but I like to hear how others do similar things. 🙂

We had used Rod & Staff with my older children. I hadn’t really looked into AG until the spring of last year. I wanted to make sure my then-rising 9th grader had covered all the grammatical bases once and for all, and this fit the bill. I am planning to start earlier with my younger daughter if for no other reason than that we can, albeit at a slower pace.

    Hope this helps! 🙂

Thank you for the added info — I always enjoy hearing the bigger picture for the context of decisions like that . Thanks!
