I am trying to plan our history for next year.  I will have a 3rd and 5th grader.  We will be starting American History using TruthQuest.  What books are a don’t miss?  I’ve been going through to see what my library has and am making my plan around those.  But, if there is a don’t miss book that the library doesn’t have I can look into purchasing it.  So, anything that y’all absolutely loved and would consider a don’t miss book?

    Thanks!!

Moccasin Trail is one of our all-time favorites (about the Oregon Trail).  Heart-wrneching, tear-jerking good, but obtainable for these ages, I think.  I would read it aloud – if you can.

The D’Aulaire biographies and A More Perfect Union. We really enjoyed the Holling C. Holling books Tree in the Trail and The Book Of Indians. Also read some Little House on the Prairie.

For more modern world history, we enjoyed The Journey That Saved Curious George. We almost skipped that one in the module 6 guide. But we really like Curious George and the kids seemed to have a good connection with that one, about WW II. Also Chestry Oak, if your library has it. It is oop and expensive.

    Sarah Whitcher’s Story

Pocahantas: True Princess and Two Mighty Rivers by Hanes

    Matchlock Gun

Benjamin West and His Cat Grimilkin

    Guns for General Washington

We had a lot more that we really liked but those are our absolute favorite, don’t miss books.

    Have fun!

Thank you for asking! I’m doing the same except with my 5.5 and 7 year old. (Happy to know I have some of the books mentioned!) 🙂 I’m looking forward to more answers.

I can recommend a few more after I get time to organize my thoughts but the MUST READ book from this time period is This Dear-Bought Land.  It is an OOP chapter book that appeals to all ages.  We just finished it and loved it so much I’m working on an accompany book to go with it for the next time we read it.  It has so much of interest, so much to learn along the side, wonderful lessons about hard work, making good decisions, becoming a man, having integrity…all the while telling the story of Jamestown and John Smith.  I’d give up all the other books we read in this time period for this one book.  (But luckily I don’t have to! Smile)

Not sure if this is what was meant in the post above (A More Perfect Union) – but this title is (also?) a video, which is truly a “don’t miss” about the making of the Constitution.  We have watched and rewatched this many, many times and it is a family favorite.

Thanks so much!!  This gives me a great list to get started with.

anniepeter – thanks so much for letting me know that was a video, too.  I will be looking for it.  I hadn’t thought of asking about don’t miss video’s, but that would also be appreciated.  We’ve done much video’s for school, but I wouldn’t mind adding in some good ones.  Thanks.

We used TQ this year for the first time and LOVED it!  I used the American History I with a 2nd, 3rd, & 4th grader.  I’ve done a ton of book reviews and have lists from our first two terms (Exploration & Colonization) posted on our blog if you’re interested….

Pangit, I have not posted it yet, but hope to this month some time.    Ball season is coming to an end so I hope to get more school planning/computer time during the month of July 🙂   I can post a link on this forum when I do if you’re intererested.

    Thanks for looking,

The Cabin Faced West…I think that’s the full title.

Prairie Primer if you’re doing lots of Little House.
