Thanks Linda! I actually was just looking at that site a little bit ago. There are a lot of resources listed for American History. Have you used any of the American History resources?
Mrs K, sorry I did not answer the last part of your question, we did not use the resources as a whole, but we did read The Oregon Trail and various things from various resources, I used a lot of the Beacon Lights of History especially vol XII which was about American Leaders and then we read biographies like The Real Geogre Washington and things from the American Heritage organization among other things. I already had a fair few history books from my college days, and so we utilized those as well. We rented historical documentaries from the library and had lots of discussion. If you look on Project Gutenberg, you can download a lot of older history books and some are very good, they have the Beacon Lights books at this link
if you then search the rest of the site you can find all sorts of good books covering all subjects. If you have a kindle or reader you can download them to that – if not you can download Kindle for PC on amazon.com and then load them into that – or you can save them to your documents and either read them online or print them off to read, though some are thousands of pages.
Blessings, Linda

Linda, are the Beacon Light books conversational style or more academic?

I’ve been looking at the sample of SCM’s Stories of America, Volume 1and I think that it might be a really nice resource to work with and add in the supplemental materials (literature, poetry, biographies, etc.) to make a really good year of American History for the high school level.
I would class them a little of both, the writing of that era is more academic yet the style is easily read in my opinion. Why don’t you download one and see if you like it. You can download and save as a document. Linda

Thanks for your input Linda. I really appreciate it!
You are welcome, I hope sme of it is useful. There are many free and good resources, and it is not hard to put a program together for high school – I wish you luck. Blessings, Linda
