    Hello all-

I know the American Girls books aren’t exactly the greatest books, but they do make history come alive (both for me, when I was a kid, and now for my 10yo dd).  They have a new one out, Caroline, and I was wondering if anyone has read these books and if they’re OK?  Julie, I had to take away because of the divorce situation – not what I needed my little girl to read all by herself…  So how’s Caroline?

I have not read them, but my dd’s ages 10 and 8 have, and they loved them! They usually tell me if divorce, boyfriends, and the like are in their books and then don’t finish them. There are some Amercian Girl books they’ve not liked because of attitudes, divorce, etc so we’ve avoided those.

My oldest is reading the first book now. It is about how Caroline’s Father is caputured by the British and her life now with her mother and grandmother. Then how she helps her village when the British invade. There is nothing bad. Caroline is a very brave and determined little girl. I don’t know about the other books yet.

My dd recently read all the books.  I asked her if she recalled any questionable material in them and she said no except that her father was kidnapped.  While she was reading them she would give me narrations and I never remember there being anything of concern.  By the way, she thought they were wonderful.

So far I have skimmed Caroline, Addy, Kirsten, Kaya and Samantha.  The first four work in our house (although the Kaya series obviously have Native American beliefs in them that can be discussed), but I don’t care for the Samantha ones (or any of the newer ones for sure).

    amama5 and others,

Can I ask what your concerns are regarding Samantha and the newer ones?  My daughter loves AG and I can’t possibly read them all with all the other reading for school, housekeeping, cooking, etc lol.  However, I want to be on top of her reading, so any input would be appreciated!!!!

I am also wondering what is bad about Samantha?  I have always loved those.  I suppose it is the feminism, though…  But mostly in the books that I can recall it is about women gaining the right to vote.  There isn’t much more than that in the book, at least from what I remember from when I was reading them back when I was 9/10/11yo.  My 10yo LOVES the Molly books – I haven’t seen anything bad in them, either, both from growing up reading them and from reading them on occasion in the past couple of years.

Bump. Wondering about Samantha. She and Felicity are dd6 favorite.

I just posted this on the other American girl thread, so I thought you may be interested too:

I found a wonderful series, writen by a Christian author that are true stories of girls from her American Heritage and have Christian principles througout. We live in a big city and our Library did not have them, and when I asked them to buy the books they did and I was thrilled! You can get lapbooks for them on Currclick.  The books are the Eleanor series and you can find them here http://eleanorclark.com/eleanor-series/books/

We love these – there are some possibly intense subjects for some, but they are part of our heritage.  They are an easy read and I enjoy them, so a pre-read is easy to do.
