Has anyone used Amazon Instant Video? Do you only get temporary access or is it like buying an audiobook where you download and it’s yours to keep? I haven’t had much luck finding good things on Netflix and don’t really want to pay the monthly fee, so I’m thinking this might be a better way to go for me?? Right now I’m looking at America: The Story of Us for $15.99. Thoughts?

It depends on what you purchase. On Amazon if you pay the full price for the download you then own it. A rental price for a movie will only get you through about 48 hours before it is gone. Also with television episodes, once your purchase it, it will stay in your video library. I use both Amazon and Netflix. Netflix is great to always have something there to watch, but Amazon has all the new stuff to purchase much quicker. I just recently purchased a year of Amazon prime but don’t really notice too much difference in the types of videos they have available than Netflix.

My 12-yr-old says “both”. Knechtslodge explained it well. We have Amazon Prime so have access to whatever ‘free’ stuff they have there. The selection is very similar to what Netflix has, but there are a few differences. I mostly use Amazon for renting the newer releases (24 to 48 hour rental period, starting when you actually start the movie…..so sometimes I’ll rent it and not start until we’re at an appt or traveling). I have purchased a few episodes of a show or a movie here and there to download to an iPod/iPad – I own those and can access them whenever I want. I’m still fairly old school and buy DVDs of things we like instead of buying the online video.

We have purchased these over the years and downloaded them to our computer. However, as licensing deal change, we sometimes lose access to our videos. It is a hassle but in the end, Amazon will give a partial reimbursement. It did save us money in the long run, though, because our DVDs tend to get ruined pretty regularly and of course there is no reimbursement when we lose those.
We have enjoyed the Prime Membership this year (lots of good educational stuff) but after a year we have pretty well exhausted their content of interest to our family and won’t be renewing.
