I thought that ELTL would be a good fit for my 4th & 2nd grader. They really do not like it and I shelved it last Christmas. I have not replaced it with anything else yet.
I was considering ULW from SCM but if I understand correctly, it is supposed to be used with spelling wisdom? We have been using AAS and I have seen great results so far and do not want to switch if it’s working. Don’t fix it if it’s not broken right ?
But what would be alernatives to using ELTL without having to switch my spelling curriculum ? Has anyone switched from using ELTL to something else? Thanks for sharing your thoughts 🙂
You could use ULW and use the SW books only for parts, skipping dictation.
Some people like Queen’s Language Lessons.
Cottage Press has a language lessons series that is kind of a cross between ELTL and Queen’s (not as light as Queen’s, but doesn’t do everything every day like ELTL). It includes nature study too.
Or you could use something like Simply Grammar, Primary/Secondary Language Lessons, or English for the Thoughtful Child 1 or 2.
ELTL wasn’t the best fit for us either, bummer because it is a nice program.
Since you have a spelling program that works for your family, you could use ULW and use as copy work practice and grammar and skip the dictations or you could transition to dictation for your older student.
Another option would be to continue with the spelling you are using that works. For the younger one you could do copy work along with current spelling and oral narrations and LA is covered. For the older one if you want to do grammar you could try Jr. Analytical Grammar, it is written to the student and fits the 4th – 5th grade level. It is nice that it is just grammar and to the point and is intended to be taught and then completed, or you could stretch it out doing it only a few days/week.
I recently switched from ELTL to Language Lessons for Today from MFW.
We had hoped to use ELTL for everything, but ended up using mostly just for narration and poetry. I didn’t love how it tried to get so much in every day -and the grammar seemed not to be working for us.
Language Lessons for Today arrived last week. It seems to have nicer lesson lengths, great variety and ease of use. I’ll be starting grade 3 and 4 next month and plan to alternate it with ULL/SW.
