Hello!  I have not posted before – I am currently teaching my 3rd & 4th grade age girls, and we are using LBC Year 3, which for world history, includes Ancient Greece and Rome.  The book we’re currently attempting to read is “On the Shores of the Great Sea” by Synge.  We really don’t like it.  It’s extremely difficult for the girls, and we have to stop at nearly every sentence to discuss word definitions and what the older language means.  They are good about most books, so I think this one is just too difficult right now.

Is there anything else we could substitute?  I have to say that I’m really leaning toward SCM for next year – it looks so much less complicated.  We are not getting much LBC done because it’s just overwhelming.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions!

When you look at SCM modules 2 and 3, you will notice that the books for grades 1-3 are very kid friendly.  I think the idea is just to introduce your young children to a time period and let them go more in depth the second time around.  The book you were speaking of is one I will be using with an 8th grader next year Tongue out I think my 3rd grader would find it difficult as well.

I would just pick some selections from the SCM modules list and use your library if you can.
