I am looking for an age appropriate book alternative to The Red Badge of Courage. My son, who is 16, has already read that book for school last year with SL Core 100. We did not get through the entire core last year but we are picking up in Module 6 where we left off in Core 100. I do have a few books left from the core that we did not read: Elijah of Buxton, Bonanza Girl, and Out of the Dust. Does anyone know if any of these books can be used instead? Or should I replace the book with Across Five Aprils since it is scheduled for 7-9th grade and he has not read it. I’m just concerned about the reading being juvenile.
What about Rifles for Watie? My ds15 is reading it right now as part of the Beautiful Feet US & World History curriculum, and he is really enjoying it! He said he likes it better than Across Five Aprils, which he also read.
I think Bonanza Girl would be to juvenile. He might enjoy it for free reading though. I don’t know about the other two books since I haven’t read them.
Across Five Aprils would not be juvenile imo, for whatever that”s worth. But I could easily second Rifles For Watie. Haven’t read it myself, but my two oldest have…and narrated it without being asked…that’s a sure sign of a good book at our house!
