  • Hello,

Does anyone have a recomendation for a geography spine other that Sailing Alone Around the World (Mod 5)? My oldest is 9 1/2, then 6, 4, 1. I looked over SAATW and it simply doesnt look like one that they will enjoy right now…We are new to SCM and expecting a baby in 2 months, so I am hoping for somthing that will easily guide us threw geography, with out a lot of prep on my end… And of course that the kids will look forward to reading and working on. With Modul 5 (to the best of my understanding) we will be covering Australia and South America-I believe mainly South America. Has any one used Stowaway? Does it work with South America too? Is it easy to use the SCM guilde along with this book? Any other recomendations?

Thank you for your time!! Glad to be part of your group!

    Kindly,

    Stacy

Would it be okay to simply do the map activities with out a story?

    Thanks!

I intend to use Stowaway that was recommended here.

Thanks missceegee! We live in the middle of nowhere- Smile so I cannot look inside the book, just what Amazon shows. Does it Cover South America as needed? I saw that it was recomended, but not if it worked out well…Thanks ofr your reply!

I highly recommend Stowaway as we used it this year and found it much more engaging than the other book.  In fact, you can read my earlier comments by clicking here.  Yes, they start off along the eastern coast of South America, around Cape Horn, then on toward “New Zeeland” and the Australian continent.

Although, I should mention, you’ll have to look up where they are on a map and then do the appropriate map drills or other activities as you go along.  Be sure to read the author’s note at the end of the book regarding the latitudes and longitudes recorded in the diary entries.  They differ slightly from the notations we use today, but she tells you where and how you’ll need to adjust them to find out exactly where they are sailing on any given day.  It was fun to look up some of their locations on maps, and we also used an online locator that allows you to put in latitude/longitude and then shows you where that is.

We are really enjoying Stowaway, and just do the map drill as recommended for South America right now.  My kids really enjoy listening to the library tape or CD at home or in the van.  They like the accents and I read lots to them already so I don’t mind letting someone else do the reading for a change:)
