We have not given our kids allowance before and are considering it. Do any of you give allowance? Do you recommend it; why or why not? How much do you give? Do you give it for regular chores or special jobs? How about ages; do you give different amounts for different ages? Do you allow them to spend it however they wish or do you have them do the jar thing – one for saving, one for tithing, one for spending, etc? Thanks for sharing how you all do it…. or don’t do it. 🙂
We give $0.10 per year of age, so the 8 yo gets $0.80 per wk and the 5 yo gets $0.50 per week. They give 15% to church or missions, 25% to savings, the rest is theirs for whatever. We don’t tie it to chores, but use it to teach stewardship of $$$. Chores are their expected contribution to the family.
We provide for all of their needs right now, but will most likely increase the allowance when they’re older and we want them to take responsibility for more of their needs.
Cindy, hmmm….where was I 3 months ago when this was posted previously???? Sorry about the repeated question. I think I might like the “no nagging” reward of it. 🙂
Thanks, Christie for sharing your idea. I’ve thought of giving them their age in allowence per month but I think I like you’re idea better.
We give the kids thier earnings from selling our farm fresh eggs. So it isn’t really allowance but a paycheck. Since they are the ones who feed the hens and collect the eggs each day we thought they should be the ones to make the profits. But if we didn’t sell our eggs I would be doing the same thing Cindy and Christie are doing.
I do think it is good for kids to learn to tithe, save and spend wisely. So whether it is allowance or a “paycheck” I think it is good for our DC to have some money to learn with. Especially with preteens/teens..since it’s only a few more years until they will be providing for themselves and a family..YIKES 😮 I know you don’t want to think about that when your ds is only 12 (I think that’s right). Just a thought.
Hey, Shelly, actually my oldest ds is 13 1/2 BIG YIKES!!! 🙂 That is really something to think about.
At this point, my boys earn money from breeding and selling their 4-H rabbits at the kent county youth fair, selling produce at the farmers market in the summer and aquiring birthday and christmas money from grandparents, etc. I’m really thinking its about time they also get a weekly & monthly allowance from us -so that they can go into money management even further.
We had to get rid of our chickens last year but are hoping for a new batch this summer. I think your idea of the boys selling the eggs for a paycheck (instead of allowance) sounds wonderful! 🙂
Well, it sounds like your boys are well on their way with earning money. I hope you get your chickens this summer..this is our first year having some and God has truly blessed us with two dozen eggs a day(even through the winter) well until a few of our chickens went missing..hmmm. 🙁
