My school year is over and I am looking forward to beginning again in January.  I want to incorporate more living books than I did this past year.  My homeschool “therapist” (actually a very good friend) has helped me get over the worry about “gaps” in our history education.  We can’t know everything.  This being said…is there anyone who used All Through the Ages exclusively for history?  If so, do you just read, do notebook pages, extra projects?  I am all ears!!

I’m curious, as well.  I am having a hard time following a guide (always feeling “behind”) and would like to just have some books to choose from, schedule them, read them, discuss/narrate, and be done.  Of course I’d like to add in a few things here and there but that is difficult for us at times, too.

    Hoping others chime in soon!

I have All Through the Ages, but haven’t used it exclusively. I was going to do that this year, but then I thought I’d try the SCM Module that fit where we were.

Anyway, my plan was to make a list of the books (in chronological) order that I thought we’d use. And organize them by “First choice” and “second choice”. And then read and discuss and check them off as we went. I figured I’d use free printables to fill in with coloring pages, notebooking pages, etc. One of my goals (and I am doing it this year, as much as I can) is to have my 9yo do a notebook page for each person she learns about…..we skipped Alexander Graham Bell (life got stressful), but that’s my goal.

Hope that helps a bit. And I hope others chime in!!!

I just finished writing up our history study using All Through the Ages. We were using something else and it wasn’t working so I just wrote up our own program. When I was feeling overwhelmed with the book choices, I did use other lists and catalogs to help me narrow things down. I also decided to chose a spine to help us stay on track. I then added lots of living books to fill it out.

I decided to just do books and a timeline. Nothing else for history.
I have given my kids the option to do projects if they want to. We have lots of activity books if they want to chose something. I just wanted to keep it easy and simple.

I’ve done things similar to Rebecca using AttA in the past. It’s doable. Hardest part is avoiding distractions from other lists/curriculum guides. Using a booklist and timeline is just as solid as a guide with a spine IMO. Enjoy your new year!
