We used AAS this year, and we went through two levels of it extremely fast. My daughter seems to be a natural speller. Very few words were missed, and if I told her a word was spelled wrong she would know exactly which one and how to correct it. Often during our lessons, she would tell me what the rule is before I even had a chance to teach it. Her mistakes are more diligent issues rather than not knowing how to spell. Perhaps she doesn’t need a program like AAS for spelling.
We are making the transition to SCM. I plan transitioning many subjects this next year, then completing our transition the following year when we do Module 1. I have been looking at Spelling Wisdom. Would this program work well with a natural speller? I also noticed SW isn’t mentioned until grade 4. Would it be a problem for her to start it this year? Does a natural speller need a spelling program? {but even if the answer is no, I am not sure I could NOT do one, that is just my personality}
We just wrapped up 2nd grade. She reads beautifully, reading American Girl books, Betsy and Tacy, and In Grandma’s Attic series. Most of the read-alouds we were supposed to read this year, she read to me! She would get quite upset should I want to read a chapter to her!
OH, I SO love to hear of someone reading Betsy-Tacy books! They are way too underappreciated!
About the spelling—dictation involves a LOT. Listening, remembering, writing before you forget, AND spelling and punctuating and . . . I’d not start yet with such a young one. How is her handwriting? Her audio memory? Her ability to concentrate on several tasks at once? I’d instead keep lists of any words she misspells, or lists of any words she has trouble with, and teach her simple visual techniques to spell them, and then wait a little bit and start studied dictation. Get a game or two (we love Quiddler) that involve spelling and keep an eye out for anything she misses.
I hadn’t heard of Betsy-Tacy books until I was doing a search for good chapter books for young girls over Christmas break. They were on my wish list for my daughter, but we lucked out big time to find 6 of them at a used book store here in town. They have an annual ‘fill-a-bag’ event, all the books you can shove in a bag for $5! My daughter is really excited about them!
As far as dictation goes, we did that weekly this last year. We transitioned to cursive this year. I wasn’t planning on it, but she begged me from August to Dec. Finally I caved, but her handwriting is very neat. She is good with audio memory too, in short phrases. {Brush your teeth, wash your face, get dressed, pick up your room, and do your devotion is another story…) = ) I watched the video on how to use Spelling Wisdom, and if it is something I can break up into phrases I think she would do fine. We are also working through the Increasing in Wisdom bible study for the summer. We just started it last week, but I use a lot of it like dictation to see how she handles it. (Writing definitions of words and verses out of proverbs) She does a good job with it.
