All About Spelling – CD-Rom necessary?

I was looking at the All About Spelling website, and I think it might be a good fit for my son since it says the program is for beginners and struggling learners. He did not do well with Spelling Wisdom at all, though my daughters can use it fine. (They don’t particularly like it, but they can handle dictation okay.)

What I’m wondering is if I really need the cd-rom of phonograms. Our cd-rom drive in our desktop is broken and I’d rather not spend to replace it right now. Is the cd more than just a phonogram pronunciation guide?

    Thanks.

We love AAS but I’ve never used the CD-Rom.  I have it and use most everything they give you, but not that.

Same here…don’t use it.  As far as I understand it, it is just a pronunciation guide which most people can figure out without help.  You can also find free online resources that do the same thing if you find that you need help.

Yep, it’s just a pronunciation guide.

It is definitely just a pronunciation tool.  We have it and used it only a few times.  The important thing to remember is not to add anything to the sound (i.e. “B” not “bu”, “m” not “Mu”, etc.)  I don’t think it is neccessary if you are careful to teach them the sounds without adding to them.  Be choosy if you look for online resources.  I have found a few that are not done right.  It seems that this would be no big deal, but for some kids this can be extremely confusing. When they begin segmenting and spelling, instead of B-A-T, it will be Bu-A-Tu.
