It’s been awhile since we read Arthur Ransome’s Swallows and Amazons book, so I don’t recall exactly what age range the series would be recommended for. Can anyone give me their opinion on that?
Also, someone here was offering Ransome’s Nature Books for Children for sale recently–titles such as A Child’s Book of the Garden, Pond and Stream–and I was wondering what age range those books might be appropriate for. I am not familiar with this series, but I did like Swallows and Amazons.

The Swallows and Amazons series is enjoyable for about age 8-9 and up. We read them when my kids were teens and really enjoyed them. We find them to be the type of book that is enjoyed by all ages. In fact, my 20 year old son has been re-reading the entire series lately.
Ransome’s nature books are for younger elementary age children. They are delightful stories about the Elf, the Imp, and the Ogre (two children and an adult) and their observances of the nature around them in various habitats.

We just finished the Swallows and Amazons read aloud with our whole family- children 6-16. Everyone loved it. What a great story. My children love all of the adventurous sibling type stories that we so well written years ago. Titles such as Five Children and It, the Railway Children, Treasure Seekers, and the like have been real hits here over the years.

So, I’m guessing the Ogre is supposed to be the adult? That’s so not fair!

I was thinking about some family reading for the summer, and I recall we thoroughly enjoyed Swallows and Amazons, so I thought maybe we would continue the series. It’s the type of book dd13 enjoys, and I am pretty sure I can get ds14 interested in it. His reading level has improved this year at the special needs school, but he still likes things such as Chuck Black’s Kingdom Series and even The Boxcar Children.

Yes, the Ogre is the adult but the term is used lovingly. 🙂
