Do any of you read these? Can you give me the name of a good one? I am looking for them on amazon and there are so many…I know some are recommended and some are not.
Or would you choose something other than Aesop’s Fables for literature? I don’t know if I’ve seen Aesop’s recommended on SCM, but I haven’t thoroughly searched the links yet either.
We recommend Aesop as part of the Joshua through Malachi & Ancient Greece study, Candace. The version that is listed is a beautiful newer book, but I also have one that I picked up for 50% off at Barnes and Noble (published as a part of their Barnes & Noble Classics set).
I mainly look for substantial language (not watered down or babyish) that is still understandable for my children. The newer book I mentioned above has beautiful illustrations, but that is definitely not a necessity.
I believe there are also some versions available free online. If you Google “Aesop’s Fables” you’ll see a lot of links. You could read through a few from different sites and get a feel for how the story’s language is styled in the various retellings. That might give you a good feel for what kind of version you want to get (or just use that online version!).
Hope this helps a little. Maybe others have particular editors or translations they prefer and can post actual names to look for.
Candace, I have a great version of Aesop. I purchased it from Living Books Curriculum. I love it because it has scripture references that tie in with the moral of the story! It’s great for beginning oral narration. I used it last year with my 7 yo Dd. I highly recommend it!
Okay, I don’t know if this makes a difference, but the book is from Living Books Press and it’s compiled by Sheila Carroll. I would do one of those fancy linky things, but I have no clue how to do it! Let me know if you have trouble finding it.
