For anyone that has children that are 9 and/or younger, and reading Ancient Egypt and Her Neighbors, do you read the entire chapter in one sitting/day? It seems very long, and a lot of information/dates that go right over their heads. They are getting main points from the chapters, but I’m not sure they are retaining much at all. I know it isn’t their favorite part of our school week though. I try to stop at certain points and have narration, but that makes our morning even longer at the table. I was just wondering if anyone has that problem too, or if my kiddos just don’t have a good attention span. Thanks
I stopped reading it to my 7yo. My 9yo is really struggling with it. I stop after every paragraph or 2 and have her narrate. She is normally my best narrator. But I really don’t think she’s getting much out of it. We finally made it to chapter 3 the other day. We’re on the 2nd page after reading it twice this week. :-
I may or may not drop it. I think it’s great for Year 6 & older, but I don’t want to read it with my Year 5 dd either. It’s just too much, imo.
My DD is 7.5. The chapters do seem long, lots of great information. What I do is read the “highlights” of sorts, not every paragraph. She seems to retain the bigger facts, and since she will do ancients again I am comfortable with not reading everything word for word. I do not want it to be so slow right now and want to keep moving through. Sometimes it amazes me what she did remember and tell me about.
I thought about selecting something different, but did not take the time to find a book, so we are reading the “highlights”
Love the book, but have pretty much a similar situation as described here. 13 yo son laps it up, 9yo and 7 yo dd’s get fidgety. As long as they do not disturb us, and color in a picture or do an Egypt craft quietly I am happy. I reckon they must be getting some of it.
Some days it is so long that we’re still reading and they’re done. My older daughter will keep on, drawing anything Egypt related, of her own accord, but… the younger one may be found doing handstands on the couch, crawling under the coffee table, you know that type of child, as long as she is quiet 😉
Ok, reassuring:) They have been required to sit and listen quietly, which they have been doing a great job, but I feel like I’m rushing through it because I feel bad reading it! I have 6 kids 9 and under, so I’ve only had the older three listen as of now, but maybe we’ll try something different, or half a chapter at a time. Thanks
