    Hello, All!

I am a newbie to SCM and CM, and will be “coming over to the Light Side” with a 5th grade ds and 9th grade ds next school year.  SCM seems like a Godsend….there’s only one little problem–we would be in the Modules 5 & 6.  With no Family history spine and no guide, I am really at a loss.

I am currently using a “check off the grid” curriculum and have no real planning experience whatsoever.  I have ordered the All Day Seminar and Planning dvds, and I look forward to diving in as soon as they arrive.  However, I would still like a little guidance from some of you all who have “been there, done that!”Wink

Any “spines” that you have found that work for those modules?  Any advice for implementing it all together?

Thanks and blessings to you all!

We have enjoyed various Russell Freedman titles and MANY documentaries from Netflix (like American Experience from PBS).  I also occasionally took one of the books from the 4th-6th grade list and used it as a read aloud.  If you wanted to use Famous Men of Modern Times put out by Memoria Press, you can get it at CBD.

There is really no reason to stress  Laughing  Read great books and learning happens!

    Thank you for the encouragement!

I love the idea of SCM and doing some of our subjects together…I’m just having a hard time trying to find resources I can use with both a 5th grader and a 9th grader.  (I will definitely have the highschooler “do” history on his own as well….I just love read a loud time!!)

How have you all done modules 5 & 6 without a guide?

We have simply read the books in the order listed, added any optional resources into the mix, and have enjoyed using Truthquest guides for commentary.   We have kept a steady pace throughout the year and will finish module 6 in July.  I recently started using the CM organizer and that is an amazing tool.  If you haven’t tried the free trial, I highly recommend it.

We’re doing Module 5 right now, as well.  And, we’re doing what Heather is doing…just reading the book list in order, adding the main character of each book (I’m behind a book or two) to our Book of Centuries, discussing the book/people/culture, etc., and when I finally get a new time line then we’ll add figures to it. Plus, we use a map/globe to locate the country/territory we’re reading about, so I leave the globes on the floor in the living room so I don’t forget its great purpose:)

I’m trying to not over do it right now since we are slowly coverting over to CM with all subjects and I don’t want my kids to have to adjust to too much at one time:) Myself included:)  I have eleminated all other textbook, twaddly type stuff, but just haven’t implemented everything quite yet.  I do have a plan and just received my *Planning Your CM Education* in the mail yesterday!

Anyway, for history we will plan some field trips along the way and utilize the internet when necessary, etc., but for now what we’re doing is plenty and the boys (11, 7 and 4) are enjoying a better quality history package than a textbook could have given, imho.  My oldest really enjoys listening in on my middle boys’ stories as they are filled with great pictures and just flat out interesting all by themselves:)
