Ive never completely followed the CM method in our homeschool. For those that do, do you trust the method?  Also, I’m having a hard time trying to figure it how to incorporate language arts for my children. For my 6 year old son, he’ll be focusing on learning to read and handwriting, which counts as copy work, correct?  Is that it?  For my third and fifth grader, I was planning on using Simply grammar and English for the Thoughtful child. I am going to start Spelling Wisdom with my fifth grader, and have both do oral narrations and my fifth grader will do oral and written narration. For my seventh and eighth grader, I want to use Spelling Wisdom and am considering Using Language Well for both. Also, they’ll be doing narrations as well. Is this enough?  How often do I schedule language arts per week?  They will be narrating each day. I guess I’m just a little overwhelmed with trying to figure it all out and schedule it in.

I have been utilizing CM methods in my homeschool for 14 years now. Yes-I completely trust the method because I have seen the results. 🙂

If you are feeling overwhelmed, I highly recommend checking out the Keep It Simple individual, grade level lesson plans available here at SCM. They are inexpensive and can help you pull it all together as you get used to CM methods.

Your plans sounds good. Language Arts include so many things that you will be doing some form of LA every day. Narration takes place every day, as well as copy work or dictation and reading. Dictation usually starts once a week and some schedule it twice a week as the student gets older. Students usually do copy work on the days that they are not doing dictation.

Written narrations should start at just one a week and then you can slowly add one a week each year until you reach the right amount for each student. For some, that is a written narration every day. Other students max out at 2 or 3 a week, depending on the length of narrations and the student’s writing ability.
