I’ve always known that I wanted my children to study Latin. I tried when dd was in 4th but the grammar aspect was too much…tried again in 5th…again too much. This year (6th) I didn’t try, but focused on grammar instead. DD has a pretty good grasp on grammar now, but I will continue with the program she is using for the next two years.
Here is my question: If I am wanting her to eventually learn a spoken foreign language (french or russian) plus Latin (visual then cambridge), would it be best to do Latin first, then the other language? Or, would it be best to have her study the spoken language for the next couple of years while she hones her grammar and then start latin in high school when she has a firm grasp?
Just trying to figure out which way to go. Thanks for any advice!
We are using Latin to learn grammar. I would say it depends 🙂 Which do you have the resources for? Remember with Latin you don’t have to worry about pronunciation, and it’s a huge leg up to many languages later on.
It wouldn’t help directly with Russian vocabulary, but Russian also has noun cases–so experience with a language that declines nouns would still be a plus. I myself do a modern language in early childhood, start Latin when the student is ready at about 11ish or so, and then add another modern language in high school.
We started Latin this year with two 6th graders and used Latin for Children. I got the teaching video which was very helpful. It has been one of my childrens’ favorite classes. I think it will be much easier for him to go into another language after doing the latin study he has done. I won’t know for sure until we actually do it, but my oldest who has taken 3 years of French said she would have liked to have taken Latin first.
