For those of you who have had children develop the ability to read at a later age, I have a question for you. My 8yo son is a beginning reader. He loves books, we have excellent books in our home, he loves to be read to. But he does find the mechanics of learning to read difficult. We did a phonics based reading program which was great. When we were getting close to the end, I felt the best thing to do was to just get him reading some good early readers. We are doing this often, and he is getting better, albeit very slowly. Would there be any benefit to going back and reviewing some of the reading lessons, or has your experience been with your late reader to just keep reading “real” books? Sometimes he does stumble over what I think should be basic words, but perhaps for some children this is part of the process?

    Thank you!

I, too, had a very late reader.  My ds9 started reading “well” at around 8 as well.  From my experience, I would not go back.  I would just keep getting the books.  DS loves when he finishes a book and gets to go pick out a new one.  I just kept finding more and more suggestions and lists and would go to my library multiple times per week picking up books that I put on hold.  Eventually, I figured out which types of books he prefered and he would get so excited about them 🙂  Now, at 9 he loves to read.  It just took a while!

    HTH,
