    Hi everyone 👋

I am starting my oldest on Delightful Reading 1 this year. She is just starting to learn her first 6 letters, but will be 6 in January.

My question is this, if she progresses quickly, could I add in the 1st grade curriculum midway through the year? Or should start it at the same time or with the next school year start? What would be the best way to proceed?

Thanks for your input and experience,

    Caiti

Moving at the child’s pace is usually the best way to go.  So if she is ready for it before next school year, I would say go for it.

Thank you kindly! That sounds like sound advice. Given that criteria, do you think you could start grade 1 and substitute Delightful Reading 1, or should I start it as I come into Delightful Reading 3, as it calls for in the Curriculum guide?

Math and science do not require the child to be able to read in grade 1, so you can start grade 1 and substitute in Delightful Reading 1. You may want to do Delightful Reading 1 more often during the week than what Delightful Reading 3 is scheduled. You will not need to do Delightful Handwriting or the Pathway Readers until your child is ready for Delightful Reading 3, so you will have some open times that you can do another lesson of DR 1, if you are following SCM’s Individual Studies for grade 1.

You can also start your child on as many of the other subjects as you would like. History, Bible, geography, music study, hymn singing, poetry, picture study, etc. do not require the child to read either. A first grade student’s lessons, excepting learning to read, are all read to her and her narrations/answers are almost always given orally.

Thank you, this is a very informative answer! I will pray and consider where to proceed.
