I know this issue has been discussed on this forum many times, including by me, but here I am again.  My 9 1/2 son is ADHD and it isn’t getting better, despite no dyes, artificial flavors, plenty of outdoor activities, being homeschooled, very limited TV and only getting access to a computer on occasion, healthy diet, etc.  His ability to control himself is a huge issue along with his being hyper – no matter what I do. I very briefly tried medication without success when he was younger. I am thinking of trying again.  I absolutely hate to do it but as a single mom and sole provider for my son, my mom and myself, it is getting harder and harder to accomplish anything with my son.  He goes to a co-op from Sept through April each year which gives me additional time to work but everything single thing becomes a battle with him and both my mom and I am weary.  I am BATTLE WEARY.  I hate homeschooling him now and have seriously thought of putting him in school.   I recently sold our house because we are building a house in a community that is more child friendly. We are living in an apartment right now and that is sending him off the edge – although he is getting to go to the park more and swim at the pool.

I would appreciate prayers and support. Also, for parents who are medicating their children, I am curious if they saw a difference.  I am tired and at my wit’s end right now.

    Thanks,

    Rhonda

Rhonda, you certainly have my prayers. Also, please understand that medication doesn’t mean you’ve failed in any way. There truly are some times that people’s bodies need medication and don’t respond to natural/diet/environmental changes. If your child had diabetes and you tried controlling it with all other options but nothing was working you would use medication, right? I have a child with major medical needs and sometimes there just is no other option than medication.

With that said, there are a host of medications and doses, so find a doctor to work with and go slowly. While XYZ medication may be the usual one that is used, it may not be the best one for your child. Be willing to try more than one until you find a good fit to help his needs while minimizing negative side effects on his body from the medication.

Have you tried essential oils, and/or mediated learning?   Dr. Carol Brown from equippingminds.com has curriculum and advice.  If you are an HSLDA member,  you can contact them and speak to her through them.  Otherwise see her website.  I have not used her materials,  but I like the theory behind it.  It goes well with Charlotte Mason methods.

For essential oils, I like Young Living. I am a distributor as of a few weeks ago.

    Hi Rhonda,

I, too, am battle weary!  Medicine has it’s place and this may be the right time for you and your son.  For us, we wanted to pursue something now as a baseline for my just-turned 11yo dd before she went through many hormonal changes.  We have tried everything for so many years and we felt her age along with family/her needs that it was time to try medication.  We are on our 2nd psychiatrist though and realize that that relationship is important and not one to take lightly.  We liked the first one but she was not accessible and we didn’t want that when it came to the variables of meds.  We love her doctor.  It’s still very new and we’ve seen great improvements but we’re still figuring out dosing, etc.

The meds may help your son tremendously…isn’t that a good thing?  Keep up with all the other good stuff you have for him too.

I think sometimes we look down upon something that can be so helpful.  It’s  truly hurtful to us and our children when we abuse the meds.

    God bless. ~ Leslie

Thank you for all of the responses. I took my son to the doctor today and we started him on medication. Having said that, I will also look into essential oils and the other recommendations.  Thank you for the advice and especially the prayers.

You’re welcome.   I recently started selling Young Living Essential Oils.  If you want to learn more,  email me at retro. fam.   at.  hot  mail dot com.  No periods or spaces. I wrote it weird to prevent others from ruining my email account.

One way or the other you will find out if medication will be helpful.   It’s ok; )
