I will have an 11th grader and a 9th grader in addition to 6th, and 2nd. We will be in the Early Modern module next year. My youngest two I have no worries about SCM being plenty.
Looking for suggestions on how others have supplemented this module for high schoolers to feel they are getting what they need.
Science, math, and foreign language are covered. They will have fine arts credit as well. 11th grader will have a health and an economics as well. 9th grader will have a health credit as well and will use Bluedorn’s logic books. I guess I am worried that they may need more for history and english than the module offers. I also want to give them some, but not overwhelming, amounts of help in writing a research paper and different types of essays.
Any encouragement and suggestions on what to add enhance in that area?
As a follow up question: I am thinking of working them both thru Analytical Grammar’s Teaching the Essay and Teaching the Research Paper. We are not analytical grammar users for grammar itself. I have been very happy with Simply Grammar and PLL/ILL in the early years and then Applications of Grammar and Our Mother Tongue. I can still utilize the essay and research paper tools without having used their grammar program, I hope?
My oldest is 13 and currently in 7th, but is an advanced reader. I supplement by looking at AO’s HEO book list and the no longer online CMH years 7-12 lists. The books in this range at AO and CMH can often be used up or down within the range. I use SCM modules as our framework for history, Bible, and geography and I add in other history books set in the same period from those two sites. my 10 and 6 year olds are using only the scm module 1 and visits to Africa books, but dd13 is using those plus some from the 7-12 part of the guide AND some from CMH.
For literature and biographies I use a mix, but use CMH list the most.
Here is a list that I created by combining AO, CMH (HUFI), and Honey for a Child’s Heart books. It’s a few years old and CMH is no more and AO may have changed some, but this is my go to list when I want a supplement or a substitute book. Hope it’s helpful – https://m.app.box.com/view_shared/4623bwo1ax9kwdcfhe7m
