  • Yesterday, I met a very famous and sweet mother, Michelle Duggar, who uses this curriculum. From what I heard, It is self paced and the kids can do it by themselves after they learn to read.

Just curious, but anyone here ever heard of this or had experience with it?

WOW You met the Duggar!  That’s so awesome!

Yes I have used it.  It was my 1st time and a good fit for a 1st year transistion.  That’s all I can say about it for me.  I will note that I have a friend who introduced me to it and she uses it through highschool and loves it.

Here’s a couple reasons why I didn’t love it: I wasn’t envolved- it’s a workbook, do it at your own pace.  It was very simple and didn’t make my kids think and they were doing many pages a day way more than expected.  It didn’t fit all learners, nothing for anyone unless they are figure it out your selfers.  If that makes sence.

I guess if you’d have specif questions I can help but I didn’t like it.  I have 7 children and there are times I’d love to say here’s your books let me know when you’re done.  But for ME that isn’t why I keep them home.  Now that isn’t to say it doesn’t work I have seen it graduate many, also not that the Duggars would pick a bad program cause they wouldn’t as I said for my wants and my families needs it didn’t work.  Misty

We used it for a year before I learned about the CM method.

I agree with the above poster— it didn’t require them to think at ALL.

By the end of the year— even though they said it was easy, and they got straight As,

But they couldn’t remember anything they had studied.

The Duggers use it for K – through 2nd or 3rd to my knowledge.

Then they switch to Alpha Omega on the computer—whatever that is called– I can’t think of it at the moment.

    Hello,

Well, I actually went to an ACE school all through my school years. Grades 1- 12. I am NOT using this program with my kids! LOL! I would say you could make it work if you had supplementing and extra reading and hands on added in etc. etc. etc. It was simply, read the text on one or two pages then answer the questions and fill in the blanks on the next page or two. It was all about getting a certain amount of pages done per PACE (this is what the workbooks are called) per day. It was very much taught to the test, IMO. It did not do well to prepare for college either. There were some very good points to the program but, in my opinion, it does not make a very good stand alone curriculum. If I were to use it, I would highly supplement.

I don’t like slamming things and I feel like that is what I have just done! LOL! I’m sorry! This was my personal experience, though. It could have also had a lot to do with the way the program was administered in the school I went to as well. Also, this program may have changed or been revised since I was using it. I have been out of school for …aahh…let’s just say, “a bit” ; –

I should clarify that I don’t know if Mrs. Duggar has used it continually, it was just listed as having been used. :). I do remember Alpha Omega as being another choice listed by their family.

Thank you all for your responses. I feel more informed about it now!

We have used ACE for some things in the past.  It is very independent but all subjects in this was very boring and monotonous for us.  We do still use ACE math and it has been the perfect fit for us.

Some people use just the English and spelling or just the 3r’s in ACE and do CM style for science and history.

It’s not cheap and has little the way of living books.  But, it is very manageable for a mom of many kids.  And the thinking part ramps up when you are nearing JR. high. when ACE says children’s brains are able to do this sort of more abstract thinking that they aren’t able to do in the lower grades.
